So for Christmas I got me an art in a box. Dru Blair has started doing these and they look like a good intro. The kit comes with stencils, paint, and a few friends to assist including a hard eraser, a scalpel, a dowel and a stirring stick as well as a high grade colour reference and 3 sheets of Dru Blair synthetic paper.

I have been waiting to get my hands on some of that stuff. My first impression of the paper, not sure what yupo others have seen but it isn't yupo! I know you can get different grades but the finish is quite different. It is really more a card.

Part of the kit includes access to training videos. The first is about 5 minutes long and takes about 10 minutes to paint.

The paint is Createx Illustration. Here is a photo of the three friends that come with the box set.

And you put the smiley faces on them lol

About time you started this!
Looking good so far- you'll be stunned at how good the iris looks when done, certainly helped me with my current project :)

Glad you like the paper paint combo it certainly works a treat!! Just the price is an issue for most people - as YUPO it certainly isn't!!

I'm 1/2 way through the sepia one using yupo for a comparison. Seems good with the illustration paint.

I got the kit as well and have gone through all three steps. They are great and I am signing up to do his class at the next Get Away. I wanted to try his class before before spending the big bucks to go to his school!!! Here is a picture of the last step in his videos. I am looking forward to purchasing his skull kit that is coming out soon.

So I did the sepia one on yupo for a direct comparison. I'll do it on the Blair paper tomorrow. The yupo was really tricky (OK, read here a complete bastard...) to work compared with the brief erasing I did on the Blair paper.2017-01-08 20.47.28.jpg

Nice job. Monochromatic pieces have always been tough but you did a great job!!!!

There is a BIG learning curve with Yupo compared to Blair paper - night and day different. I did the eye kit too (wonderful job, by the way) and found Blair's paper was fairly easy to work on, while I have been struggling for about 6 months to develop a go-to method for working on Yupo. I keep thinking to just leave the stuff alone, but will catch glimpse out of the corner of my eye of a piece I completed on Yupo, and it stands out against the other pieces I have completed...

I will for sure be ordering the new skull kit - can't pass up the (any) opportunity to learn!

Yes, definitely easier to work than yupo with the createx illustration. I might need to try my golden on it as well. Thanks for your comment. Here is the DB paper version of the sepia one. Please excuse2017-01-09 12.37.05.jpg the annoying overspray on the left, got a little excited... :)
