Artist paints

OK first of what may seem like a silly question from a new airbrush user (I know no question is silly if you don't know).
Can you use acrylic artist paints in the airbrush and if so what is the best medium to thin it without making it to transparent.

Or is it a case of buy the correct airbrush paints on the market.

I also intend to spray spirit stains but that I know can be used.

It is possible, through larger nozzles, but 99.9% of people don't. You really do want to get airbrush specific paint. Its not a gimmick like a lot of crafty type things, it has a much finer ground pigment to go through the airbrush nozzles without clogging ut, and even then it will still need the appropriate reducer. Plus while you are learning, there is enough of a learning curve to deal with, without unnecessary added complications. Seems expensive but you use literally drops at a time, so it goes a long way.

Squishy is exactly right. I was successful at using artist acrylics and thinning with Liquitex airbrush medium. That said...I started buying different airbrush paints to try and it's so much easier learning my control of the airbrush without mucking with with clogs. Let's me focus on the project more than dealing with the paint.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Spend the money on a good quality airbrush specific paint.

I use a combination of airbrush paints and acrylic inks(inks being the key word). That just works for me!!!!!

I use a few colors that arn't made in airbrush paint that are off the shelf at wal-mart But I reduce the hell out of them to get them to spray and they still clog the brush but I know they will anyway as theres glitter in them! But If your smarter then Me you will order airbrush paints like e-tac or createx Ill. paint as it will save you from alot of issuse's.

Createx Wicked is my favourite paint. It is such a good all rounder and have used it on many different surfaces. The colours are vibrant and light resistant so don't fade.

One thing though. You must use the Wicked high performance reducer. It doesn't work well reducing with water. And the qualities I listed which make it awesome, mean it needs quite a bit of reduction, so reduce more than you would expect to. The reducer is also a great brush cleaner, so flush a little through at the end of a session. No need for extra cleaning products.

I have also ordered the reducer as I ordered a set which has all the primary colours and the reducer in it. I chose these after reading the post on favourite paints and also looked on there site for information
