Lips practice

My first try at lips , a lot to improve , I try erasing at first , then use white to add textures but didn't come out good , but is just my first try , I don't complain

I need to work more in shapes than in texture , and do a better mapping of reference , I just include a few guide lines so my lack of drawing skills affect the attempt too

Using only erasing (better)

After adding textures with white (worst)

I think you are being too hard on yourself. That is an excellent 1st try. Sounds like you learned a lot.

I think your lips look good!!

lol sigh... You got a purty mouth quote entered my head soon as I read that. Lips look good and you learned one of the most valuable lessons, you can't spray white over opaque black or it shifts blue. Preserve your whites when painting then at the end you only have to come in and hit just the brightest areas and will avoid the shift. Also adding just a hint of a complimentary color like orange to your white would kill the blue cast

Almost totaly agree, but lips and eyes are an exeption for me. If you paint a thin layer of reduced white (or transparant white) over the lips the blue shift will give them a bit of a glazy, wet look. Do this only when you are done using erazors, I tend to save it for the step before I finish/touch up with my darkest color.

ps I don't use this in monochrome, only when doing color!

Agree with AndreZA, the first one looks better, (very good in fact), I would have perceived with a bit more erasing and or scratching ..

I also hate doing lips..

Thx to all for the comments and tips.

The first look a lot better , my first plan was to do it monochrome erasing and scratching , but the surface is not good for that , so was not working well .

I know that white will shift and was not correct , but because is just practice I choose to play with it , I washed all in reduced white , just to see how can I make it look and if blue shift can be corrected glazing , etc

Obviously not !!! LOL

Not sure what would happen, but what if you dusted the whole thing with a very trans black to knock the white back some? Just thinking out loud...

Could you please expand on this for a beginner? Thanks.
Just simply means use the white paper or base as your highlights and not paint over it all with black and then try to come back in with white again. Highlights with white should be sparingly applied and reserved for really hot spots and things that need to look wet or super shiny.

These look suspiciously like the lips of one Salma Hayek, could that be true? lol, looking good to me, even if your not happy yourself it's a damn good start, just keep messing some more and you'll soon reach a point your happy with.
