One problem solved with CM-SB - Plastic side-cup

You may or may not know that I've been having problems with my new CM-SB since I bought it and I've even sent it back to Iwata for them to check over for me. However there was always one problem that never seemed to get fixed and yesturday I discovered what it was!!! :glasses::thumbsup:

I have always used Plastic Cups for my Iwata side-feeds so yesturday I was using the Micron again and feeling extremely disappointed with the spray pattern and how unreliable it was. I was just giving up and about to move on to my Olympos when I thought I'd try one of my Iwata metal side-cups. Low and behold the airbrush sprayed like an angel :D:rolleyes::shock:

I put the plastic cup back on, rubbish again, metal cup back on, brilliant spray pattern, responsive and basically functioning as I would expect a Micron to. :laugh:lol Yey!!! I am a very, very, very happy girl!!!! (Update! I just tested the plastic cups on the other side of my Micron and they work. So it is the Left side that has problems with the plastic cups and the Right side is OK!!)

It has been months since I bought it and it arrived with a split nozzle and a bent needle. The new nozzle was sent by the supplier but it still didn't work well. Iwata checked it, found and replaced the bent needle. @Immortal Concepts correctly thought the Needle Packing Screw was not functioning properly and I fixed that with a bit of Plummers Tape last week. Now finally I've found the last piece of the puzzle and it was the Plastic Cups!! I never thought there would be a problem because they work fine in my HP-SBS.

So there you go :D my CM-SB is finally working properly lol:laugh:  So if you are having spray pattern/atomising problems and are using Plastic side-cups, try the original metal cup and see if it fixes it. (Or try the cups on the other side of the airbrush)

I just wanted everyone to know that my CM-SB is (fingers crossed) fixed now and to thank everyone that helped me with the problems.

Well that's good. I guess the plastic cup is too narrow in its passage into the body? Damn cheap plastics

Actually I've just done some more tests and I think it is just MY Micron and it is side specific. I prefer to put my side-cups in on the Left side and it is the Left side that has the problem with the plastic cups. I have just tested the same Plastic cups on the Right side and they ALL WORK FINE!!!

So it's not the plastic cups, the make of plastic cups or the metal adapters. It is my Micron that works with all cups on the Right side and only with the metal cup on the Left side. OK, so now I know and I can work with that. :D But it just goes to show that things need to be tested and I can't assume how they will work until I do. :glasses:

Are you using Aztec cups?
Have you seen or tried these cups

That is excellent news. I would never have thought of that. Try a bit of chapstick/beeswax on the tube going into the body. Maybe there is a bit of an air leak on the left side.

@Bossman No I haven't got one of those, I do have a side feed plastic bottle like these ones for €7.50

And these are all the different types of side-cups I have, of which I have multiples of them.
The top two on the right are from the "Plastic cup Conversion Set" but I have changed the screw to a bigger one so it's easier to take out for cleaning. The top right is my modified cup and it has BlueTac on top of the hole in the lid to keep the paint from drying out. I use the modified ones the most.

Thanks AndreZA, I am really happy to find this out and purely through trial and error. Your absolutely right, there is a definite miniscule air leak on the left side when using the other cups and it was enough to cause a nasty problem. Oh chapstick! that is a good idea  I'll remember that for the future but I'll stick to using the metal cup for now. :D

Just a thought have you trimmed the feed tube on the plastic cup ?it might be hitting the back of the airbrush and not sealing around the tube?

Hi basepaint, no I haven't because it is happening to all the different types of non-native side cups (see photo above) but not to the native Iwata metal cup. This only happens with the cups on the Left side of the airbrush. All the different cups work on the Right side of the airbrush. It was a good thought though :)

My conclusion is that there is a very slight difference in the opening on the Left side to the Right side and that is enough to cause a problem for the non-native cups. I will use the metal cup as a general rule and if I want to use the other cups I will put them in on the Right side :D I have 3 metal cups so I will still be able to swap colours quickly if I want to.

Finicky little things those Microns are......LOL. Hey Melbee what paints are you using with your micron?
Hi Chief, I'm using Com-Art mixed with Com-Art Medium to keep viscosity but thin the pigment and Bottled Water to thin the pigment AND the viscosity. At the moment I'm using a 0.23mm setup like you have in your (lovely new) CM-C+ and the mix is about 1:5:1 Paint:Medium:B.Water because I want to keep the viscosity but make the paint very transparent for layering. With my 0.18mm setup I'd have to swap the Medium and Water ratios because I'd need a much thinner viscosity to go through the smaller setup.
I've also just bought some ETAC Marrissa FX paints and I will be trying those out on a painting soon using Reduce Air and Bottled Water in the same manner I use with the Com-Art.

I will have to try that out myself I haven't been to happy aboot my micron iether

Thanks Melbee, I have Com-Art and actually been trying to use Golden High Flow acrylics. Golden makes something called transparent extender for them, and boy does it work. I have not tried thinning with distilled water yet as I didn't want to loose the binding and have been reducing with W500. I will give the water a try. I also have Golden's airbrush medium that is their version of a base.

Hi chief, great, looks like you are covered for paint. By the way Golden Airbrush Medium is to be use with Golden Fluids and IS NOT a Transparent base, it is for thinning the viscosity of Golden Fluids to make them airbrushable. Transparent Extender IS a Transparent Base for Golden Airbrush Colors and High Flows. I have both. You can use them together but you shouldn't use Airbrush Medium on it's own with High Flows. If you go to the Golden Website they have extensive information about both and the differences and why :) I've read loads of info there and it made my brain explode to the point where I didn't know which Medium to use where with what in the end Ha Ha Ha lol:laugh:

No I have never used the airbrush medium, heck the bottle is still sealed. Anyways I went ahead tonight and pulled the trigger on some e tac paints. Gonna give them a try, as I read your post on testing the high flow's and I read up on golden's site, I was having a terrible time with erasing and turns out that is the high flow's major drawback. It was even damaging the 500 series plate bristol that I use.

@crewchief227 Yeah, that's why I don't use High Flow's because they are designed to give a hard film finish which makes them difficult to remove. That's doesn't work for erasing techniques and is why I use Com-Art and I'm trying out Etac FX. I presume you are using FX because the Private Stock series is also designed with a hard film which makes them harder to erase after a short window. How are you getting on with the Etac?

How are you getting on with the Etac?

ETAC EFX is the best illustration paint out there in my opinion. Sprays like a dream, very little tip dry, and it erases easily. Most times I don't even use electric erasers with it, unless you use a really light touch they will erase right down to the illustration board.

Actually I haven't gotten the e tac yet as I just ordered it a couple of days ago. I am liking the com-art though, I wish I had a local retailer for it, if I get desperate I can always drive down to Seattle (Hour and half) and visit Blick where they have all the Com-Art paints, or just order online.
