I want to make a mono piece with Etac carbon black but i'm not sure which blue to add, I don't have phthalocyanine blue, which worked great for Beans Sin city piece. Any ideas on what to add? or what colors to add to achieve that
Which blue to add is a bit of personal taste. Most people add a tad of color to black as it somehow looks blacker with it than without it and the black looks less "dead" .
E'tac colors I often use to make the black a tad more vibrant are:
Burnt Umber (deep shadows on faces)
Blue shade Naphtol red (warmer black)
Blue violet (makes the black somehow more black )
Sepia
Any purple
That just depends on what one is doing I think as both have their purpose. For Monochrome I prefer transparants as they just give more control with the buildup
A lot of the time I'll mix the two together, trans colors can help make opaque colors more vibrant and can help remove some of the chalkiness, sometimes I do so in cup or by adding trans layers over opaque layers which essentially does the same thing, if you do make your blue and you don't like it on canvas, consider adding a trans layer blue to adjust it..but play around with the blues you have, you can always easily adjust it with your purples and reds to warm or cool it-good luck.

Just thought I'd add that if you do get some Thalo Blue be careful in using it... Phthalocyanine colors are very, very strong. A little goes a long way, and it's easy for those colors to over power everything else on your palette.
