Great as " one full of all the answers" at least to my questions:thumbsup:

Because my wife paints, i have looked pretty extensively into Gesso for her canvases (recycled) and there are a bunch of YouTube videos that show you how to make your own. I will caution you that the savings to make your own is about 10-15% which isn't really worth it to me. The ingredients you need to buy are only really cost effective in bulk which means you will lay out more money initially. If you need it in small quantities, you may wanna look into that. The ingredients are pretty straight-forward and simple.

Id never imply that old man! Where ya been?

Finally someone who understands the importance of my being stupid:thumbsup:

Had a lot to deal with recently but all is calm again, it's just a question of for how long?, life is as unpredictable as the weather as I'm sure you well know, I have been checking in here and there keeping an eye on buggers making sure everyone is behaving themselves, lol

Gesso is already very cheap when you compare it to other specialist materials, with the saving you mention it would indeed be pretty much a waste of good airbrushing time to make your, however, I often do certain things for the hell of it just to be able say "I did it" lol Here in Holland we have a chain of stores called Action which I believe is similar to B&M bargain in Lancashire, England, I usually get dragged in there under duress by the wife but often I find some handy stuff, and Gesso is no exception, I frequently find half litre bottles there for as little as 80 euro-cents so around 60 pence, even if I don't need it I buy up what I can just in case I don't see it again for a while, being the tight arsed Scottish twat that I am, I just can't let chances like that slip by, but I am sure there bargains just lucrative also in England/Britain.

Gesso is a traditional thing so it's made in the same way whatever company does, but some have a higher water content to either keep the price down or increase their mark up, for spraying onto MDF this is not a problem although in your wife's case the better quality would be better certainly in the case of her recycled canvasses where full coverage is obviously the key.

Being a chippy i can tell you that you will find mdf cheaper at Travis perkins than you will b n q ...... without the mi n i gun i found gesso can be applied pretty smooth with a sponge gloss roller, but obviously spraying would put it down a hell of a lot smoother

To darn expensive here in Australia. The average price I've seen for 1 Litre opaque gesso is around $40 (32€ /£23)
If anyone in Australia know of a suitable alternative I'm all ears. I found an aerosol high build primer but it doesn't come in white. The only place I found for clay board is selling 5" x 7" (paintpal size) $19 a pack of 3 plus postage.
There has to be something out there!!

You guys are being robbed down there, here in Holland you can get 5 litres for €42:50 Here at this rate the half litre bottle I have work out around €4:25 normal price but I normally wait until until there is a promotion on, the price always different but usually under €1

Perhaps making your own is a better option in Australia if the prices are so high, I did a little googling and there seems to be different methods for doing it and most of the materials are already lying around the house, form what I've seen some folks are replacing maybe hard to find animal glue with PVA glue, but I would assume you would have mix a small amount and use it up quickly, some are also using baby powder instead of sodium carbonate which is obviously going to stink.

You could maybe send an email to the link above to see if they would ship, might worth it considering 5 litres would works at nearly 200 Aussie dollars, hell at that rate I would just use household acrylic primer who's only drawback is it is not pure white, but neither is Schoelershamer paper:confused:

I'm currently testing alternatives. Squishy suggested the hi build primer, it lays down beautifully but can't find white. Only beige, grey, pink!!

Found out you can also get it in black and transparent, and if you want a different colour you can mix it with acrylic paint apparently.

Yes, but reduce it first with liquefying medium, in small amounts.
Makes it runny and easier to mix it with the other gesso.
Also, doing that makes it easier to spray onto your surface evenly.

This makes me want to prep some panels. I love painting on gesso. Been weeks of nothing bit helmets or shirt when i have had time forbpainting!
