Hey guys,

I am repainting some waterfowl decoys before the season starts, and I'm wondering what paints come in flat colors and which paint will work best since the decoys will see lots of water and mud. All of my decoys are molded plastic.

My incredible magical tallent of foresight predicts some posts in regards to the introduction section :p

the information you give on what you want to do is a bit scanty, it would help to know hat equipement you have avaliable and what size of objects we are talking about (we just love pictures for a reference around here :D)

If you are going to apply the paint with an airbrush I think almost all "normal" airbrush paints would be suited (createx regular ecepted) as they all have "normal/plain/flat" colors in their range (if you prep the surface ofcourse). As it does sound like a bit of custom work autoair would be the first to come to my mind.

As you indicated the decoy's will see a lot off "abuse" (I'm also foretelling some remarks about that one :p) you will have to clearcoat them, preferably with 2k as that would give most protection. No airbrush paint (water or urothane based) will stand up to much abuse without a protective layer of clearcoat.

Haasje I never realised you could predict the future!!!! Not once, but twice.....

First true prediction -

Hi quackaddict, I'm sure you will gets lots of advice, but if you go to the intro section first and tell people about yourself, not only will it give everyone a chance to welcome you to the forum, but also with some background info, people will be able to advise better. Where you are in the world to direct you paint/shops available in your area, what brush you use, what your prep method is, or whether you need advice with this or suitable primers etc. All this will steer folks toward giving you better info.

Second true prediction.

Duck abuse - I'm sure there are specific websites for that sort of thing, and haasje is right, always use protection lollollol

while in the hospital this week I was asked if I was ready to go home. My answer?

does a one legged duck swim in a circle?

To answer your question.
I would sand them down

Prime with plastic primer from a can.

Airbrush with wicked paints or auto air.

And id clear with a matt 2K clear.
If i didnt have access to a spray gun i would rattle can clear with a cheap matt clear understanding its only gonna last a season.

We like to threadjack around here, but we do take animal abuse seriously. @Madbrush has been seriously abusing sheep a long time. I am certain he can give you pointers...

Fist off what are made of ?
I have old hand craved wooden one, Foam ones and a couple of the plastic.
Make no different what you use to paint them just make a huge different on how you clear them and which flat clear you use...
Rattle can clear while affordable does not hold up well under the advice weather conditions of duck hunting.
I use this http://www.coastairbrush.com/proddetail.asp?prod=4.4_VOC_Flat_Finish_Klear for clearing anything I want to need to keep dull.

Hey mate I do not abuse the sheeps, I am in fact very kind to them, I buy them flowers, I say nice things to them, I win their confidence and I always say thank you when I'm done, how could that be construed as abuse?....:(o_O:)
