What Eraser Works Well?

Hi all,
I've been getting back in the swing of airbrushing. I have my compressor and brush all tuned with new tip and needle. It works like a dream now. Now that I am playing around I wonder what eraser works the best for the highlight technique. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
D.

Ohh thats a loaded question...

Even though i use eraser tehniques less these days i have about 10 different types. And a couple different exacto blades.

I have a typerwriter eraser i love very hard.
Faber castell pencil eraser.
Art soap eraser block
Gum eraser block
Super fine stick eraser
Tuff stuff stick eraser
And i likely use a regular #2pencil backside eraser the most.

I have one fiberglass pen eraser bit its a thick one.
Ohh and an electric eraser..
No I dont have a problem, im not addicted im not!

Crisp highlights
  • curved scalpel blade,
  • 2mm fibre pencil,
  • electric eraser - don't bother with the derwent one, its rubbish for what we do, its probably ok on paper/watercolours
soft highlights / textures
Faber castell pencil eraser and anything in Nada's list (and probably the Derwent eraser)

Helix do a 5mm one,
Sakura also do one, not sure on the size of it,
Foxy studio do a 'clone' (which I have) and I bought extra grey tips. Its awesome !!

I don't have any problems with my Derwent battery eraser. It's not as poweful as the Style Up that I got from Foxy Studio but that is okay, I use it with a soft tip for light erasing.

BUT, you have to use a surface that can be erased from. Copy paper does not work. You have to use paint that can be erased and it needs to be at the correct viscosity. Too thin and it the paper soaks it up and you cannot erase either.

Here's a few of mine.

@AndreZA Thanks for those great labeled pics. Very helpful. So, I imagine that the less porous the painting surface the better for erasing? What surface works well? Perhaps a cold press illustration board or clay board or maybe a gessoed board/canvas?

Thanks,
D.
