Ok canvas,erasing and scratching

I only paint big things on canvas as it is cheaper then Schoellershammer board of the same size and to view big art correctly you need to stand a certain distance away and then you lose the detail anyway.

You guys were sooo right got the clyboard 16x20 cost like 19 from blick. Definitely better than canvas. I can scratch but erasing is another story. But i will definitely work with this

Thanks whats that g4 paper

Here is Europe, the G4 is more or less the standard airbrush paper. I really love it. I tried a couple of papers (no yupo and no canvas yet), but this was definitely the best for me as it can be used for basically every technique. To ruin it, it really takes a lot and if you buy the block (20 sheets) the price is ok. I have on in 25x35cm and one in 50x70cm. The 50x70cm is about 2,7€ per sheet and I don´t think you can get much cheaper for that size at the quality it provides. So especially for practicing (I mean real pictures, no dots and lines) this is great choice in my opinion.

I like to use canvas for certain pieces. You must put a few coats of gesso for airbrushing. I can erase and scratch without any problems. But, even though I use several layers of gesso, there is a texture to the surface. If you are going to be doing a large piece, then details are not a problem. But, don't try to do a detailed piece on say a 5" x 7" project. I, too, love the Schoellershammer 4g paper. However, I would prefer an illustration board with a little more substance to it. The 4g board is expensive to buy in the states because you have to buy in bulk, as has been mentioned over $200.00. I have ordered some Crescent Hot Press Illustration board, a couple of different types. I'll let you all know what I think of them later. I'm looking for something similar to the 4g paper but can be bought here in the states that works for ABing with erasing and scratching techniques.

In doing something on clayboard not which is definitely better than canvas. If you find something like this elusive 4g paper here in states let me know for sure

I've been in touch with Haasje and he likes the Crescent board, but uses the Schoellershammer 4g because he has a lot of it. But, I'm not sure which Board is equivalent to the one he buys across the pond so I'm trying a couple of different ones. I'll let you know.

Unfortunately, the last supplier for Schoellershammer 4g in 20"x28" in the US just discontinued that size and now only carries the next size up at $237 a package of 25. That is well beyond my price range at current. Perhaps a few of us could go in on a set and someone cut it down and split it up? I could go $60 for 12 20"x28" and 2 10"x14"s.

WOW! 237 USD for 25pcs of the 20x28" Schoellerhammer??? Is that the thicker version or the normal one? For the normal one (which is enough in my point of view) it would be really expansive!

As mentioned if you buy that in Europe you get it for about 55€ for 20pcs of the same size! That is about 63 USD! Maybe it would make sense to directly order from Europe? I can't believe shipping would be more than 50 USD and you are still at about half the price!

But please check first if it is the normal G4 or the G4 thick version you get for 237 USD, as they are priced significantly different! The thick version is not produced anymore, so that could only be stock they sell through. To my knowledge there is no difference in the surface between the thick and the normal version, it is simply thicker, which allows you to hang it up somewhere without a frame or any other support. The normal version is 250 g/m² and the thick version is 1360g and 1,5mm thick. So depends on what you want to do with it.

I grabbed the opportunity when I was offered 10 sheets of the thick (Dik) 39" x 28" sheets for $250. You must work out how many pieces you can get out of a sheet and then see how economical it is. I'll get between 70 and 80 painting out of those 10 sheets.

I see Papermill is selling the No4 Schoellershammer (it has an airbrush on the cover) as well. I have a pad and have used it. I don't know how much different it is to 4G but it feels the same if not smoother than 4G.

As I wrote, afaik it is the same surface, but not that thick. I once sent an email to a shop asking if there was any difference between the surface of the No.4 and the G4 and they said no which was confirmed by the manifacturer. I have both here and I cannot tell any difference.

So No.4 = G4 and G4 has the same surface as G4 thick.

I have been using Schoelershammer No. 4 Airbrush paper for the last two years and love the stuff, my only complaint with it other than it being cream and not white is that it warps when I start painting, although it does return to flat when it dries which makes it fine for me, I just recently purchased some Schoelrshammer G4 board thinking I would get the same thing but with rigidity, I was wrong, the only thing I liked about it was that it is whiter than the paper, I didn't like it at all, it was almost impossible to scratch without destroying the surface which I found to be a lot softer than the paper, to make it worse it has a texture which I don't want, since I do a lot with scratching I want my lines to be uniformed and unbroken rather than hopping an skipping all over the surface, so I'm afraid they are definitely not the same, I'll stick with the paper since despite the small disadvantages it gives me what I wan't, after one time using the G4 board I knew enough to know it just doesn't suit my needs.

I would actually much prefer to work on my gessoed MDF, but the preparation is the killer, the No. 4 paper is ready to blast other than masking a little border around it, so I'm happy to pay for it since it does save me a lot of time:thumbsup:

I also tried some Yupo for the first time and my conclusion there is, although I like easy, there is such a thing as too easy, not at all impressed with it, for what it cost, it was worth it just to try, but what I have left will be used just for free hand shields and practising new methods, as @AndreZA said somewhere else, our work wouldn't last long on it, your work could easily be removed from it, I did notice that strong bright colours although removable will dye the surface, so it's not even reusable except maybe as stencil material.
