Hey all,

I am completely new to airbrushing and have checked out all the awesome AirbrushTutor.com videos and have been using a airbrush from Harbor Freight (i bought it to paint my model cars/trucks) after doing some research I am interested in doing more than just painting models.

I was wondering is a Neo CN a good brush to start with for illistration painting.

Also can you use waterbased acylics to airbrush and if so what can i use to thin it down.

thanks in advance

Hey ramos
I have a Neo CN and i love it and would recommend it, BUT some will argue against it as theve had bad experiences, they seem to be hit and miss. I use mine for tshirts and large backgrounds.
Yes waterbased paints can be used thro it, i use com-art and liquitex acrylic inks mainly. These can be watered down with plain water

I think he might be referring to thick tube acrylics which I wouldn't recommend, stick to airbrush specific paints/inks:)

Well now if I could have seen an introduction that covered things like where on this planet you live ,
Maybe what kind of budget you have to work with. maybe you could get a lot better answer to your question.
Neo is an Iwata branded airbrush but not made by Iwata,
So they are kind of like the knock offs which as Matty stated can be hit or miss , But being you state you are looking to do illustration work .
Can you tell us what you end goal it.
I have seen a lot of newbies start out with goals and but cheap airbrushes due to either budget or lack of knowledge. We do try our best to guide you in the right direction but we do not have a crystal ball to see where everyone lives or what age group they fall under again that is where an introduction comes in handy .
That is the first place I go look for when a question such as you comes up .
But I have no way to guide you to the best deals for you with out knowing where you live.
So now I will get off the soap box and steer you to the introduction section http://www.airbrushforum.org/introductions/

Thank you for the input. I am talking about water based acrylics that come from a tube at my local craft srore. I live in Pennsylvania (U.S.A). This is all so new and has gotten me A little confused at times. I ended up buying the Neo CN and i love how smooth it is. I have only put testors airbrush paint through it so far but I am going to get some luiqitex(I think that's how it's spelled lol) and golden after work.

I would like to learn to do portraits and some cartoon illustrations. My budget is fairly inexspensive right now as i dont want to sink alot of Money until I know that I am going to stick it out for the long hall but I love the creativity/relaxation of it so far.

Last night after playing with the NEO for A little and trying the eye from airbrush tutor I noticed I need to get better at control long my lines and I was getting alot of splatter when doing the blended lines. From what I have read it may be due to the air pressure. I also have a problem with tip dry but think a reducer will fix that from what I've read on here.

Dont get liquitex. If you buy golden get their high flows. I mix high flow with wickeds w 100 reducer.
Dont know what your local places have, but the most newbie friendly paint that i have used is Com Art. It is also an outstanding fine art paint. You can also reduce either of those with water. I use the w100 reducer simply because it makes cleanup easy and slighly better tup dry as well as less graininess.

Also since you just want to see how it goes, buy few colors
Its easy to want all of the colors and get carried away. Honestly you can start with one color.

Do you have a Hobby Lobby in you area of Pa. ? If so they carry Wicked made by Createx ,which is designed for airbrushing.
As Nada said about Golden make sure it is the High Flow (costly paint but has nice flow) The fluid Golden is a bit on the grainy side and would have to be filtered or else it will cause clogs in the nozzle.
As far as tube paints , You can use them providing you mix them in a separate jar and then run the reduced version through a paint filter . A few artist do this and make some amazing art. But it is a style they are going for .

I checked on hobby lobby and they closest one is a 2 hours from my house.

I have been getting my stuff from my local Michaels craft store but their airbrush section is mixed in with the brush painting section and there are so many options it's hard to know what to look for. I am leaning toward ordering some createx black and white from Amazon since there isn't any there else to get it

You must live near Plamerton LOL . Michaels carries Spectra tex made by Badger .
if ya got to order check out the good folks at coast airbrush http://www.coastairbrush.com/

Michaels pulles all their spectra tex from the shelves here. The only airbrush paints they are carrying is vallejo. You can get the high flows in the golden aisle here though.
Odd the Micheal's here still has it on the shelf , Or at least they did last night.
I will have to check them out on the high flow being we do have a local mom and pop art store that carries it but their prices are high , It is cheaper to buy it in the 8 Oz bottle 8 OZ 14.95 no matter what the color is , The 2 Oz bottle range from 4.95 t0 12.75 , I got mine for FREE :D due to I questions the Golden sales rep about why I should buy his product over Wicked that is twice the size and half the price so he gave me a ten pack of the opaque and a ten pack of the transparent LOL I love guilting folks into things :D

And i need golden black, my puppy got my bottle of black and dyed my bedroom carpet for me... pretty cool abstract artwork.....

What is a good product to hope stop tip dry. I think I read about reducer or retarded.

I use wicked w100 with goldens and com arts. I use w500 with wicked paint. Water will reduce most water based paints. I do NOT use goldens airbrush extenders and so forth they cause a color shift i can see.

I e got some unopened spectra tex here.. but have never tried it. So cant say for that.

So a quick update. I found a local art supply. Store on the way home from work that was going out of business and got 14 bottles of createx for 60% off. Now to run home and start spraying!! :)

Createx airbrush colors? Or other? If it is just createx airbrush colors you are going to ha e to reduce it a LOT!

with the standard textile Createx I would start off at about 1 drop paint to 6 drops reducer.

Part two reducer , Since you are just starting out here is the home brew recipe . I will base this one a 8 ounce bottle , 2 ounces of alcohol ( I use ethyl alcohol 200 proof ) 6 ounces water and 1 drop of glycerin per ounce so in this case 8 drops .
The alcohol helps with drying and reduction and works with the water, The Glycerin is to help with tip dry .
There is no end all cure for tip dry due to when you have air moving paint the paint will dry . Makes no difference if it is water base or urethane .
But at 60% off on the paint it is a great deal and will at least give you a starting point to learn from .

He means he uses his moon shine, and he forgot to mention how much you are suppose to drink. @RebelAir had a write up on the proper ratio of drinking to airbrushing somewhere on this forum. You dont have to drink for airbrushing to be fun, but sometimes it helps to understand what the rest of us are saying.
(Disclaimer I rarely drink) I am still waiting for my liver to catch up from my 20-40 years.
