Practicing flames

I agree with everyone else, you have your colours popping nicely, I think though that you could add some sparks and some hotspots on your final layer. Less is def more, and the shapes don't all have to be flame shaped, throw in some random ones too. When doing licks I think of one side having a harder edge to define the shape, and then a soft faded edge, there's no need for a stencil at all. I've added a pic of something I did a while ago, as it's hard to explain, hoping that makes it clearer lol.

I noticed your first layer on the pic you started today has a lot of shapes in it. You don't really need to do this at this stage. The first layer all you really need to do is map out the area you are going to be painting, and then give it the red to build on. It also looks quite solid and symmetrical, which can take away the natural look. The second layer is when you start to build the shapes - but still keep it pretty loose. Then as you can see on my pic, I go to town on the detail in the top layer, before finishing with the hot spots.

My flames aren't exactly a classic look, more like a hodgepodge of different styles that clicked into something I could manage lollollol, but hopefully it shows that you don't always have to have a typical flame shape.

Hey Squishy, I have seen this valcovers before. Thanks for the pic and advice. This one here it somethin in line of what I want to do. Thank man.

Nice effort for a first try, a little overworked in the red stage though. It's just a hint of flame at the beginning leaving the detail for later.

Ok Johnny, I started an end table this morning, and took a few photos. This is just Wicked White at the moment, after which, I will decide on what colors to use. I might go transparent yellow, and red oxide, or I might go with the new candies....undecided yet. Hope this helps you a little, I took pics of when I used the shield.

And the last one lol

So, I hope this helps you out just a little bit. As you can see, it is indeed all free hand, but using the shields helps create more of a flowing highlight. Those shields you see in my pics, I cut them myself....kinda cheap that way I am lolololol

Hey Johnny, great start with the flames so far, everyone has pretty much said how to achieve the real flame look. I have done a realistic fire class and it was difficult even after airbrushing for a long time.
Have you watched the airbrush Tutors videos? I will link it in case you haven't, also there's the master of true fire Mike Lavallee

Two different styles both great results

Mike Lavallee True Fire:

I hope these help

Thanks Jord001. I have watch both videos countless times and I'm still go through them. I'm using airbrush tutor paint mixture, and I think I got the color pretty good so far. It's just getting the flame layers and the leaks down. I kind of wanted to use the airbrush tutor free hand style but I got a long ways to go for that.

PS. The Mike Levalle video is the short version one. There is an older video like an hour in a half long. I wrote earlyer on this post where to go. It's in Spanish caption.
