Well here we go again, thought I would try another tiger. I guess you should do one of these every year and then compare them to see if there is any improvement. Just like many people on this forum tell the Newbees, date your drawings, put them away and dig them out later. When I get to the end of this SBS I will post my first ever tiger, which I was so proud of, and my latest tiger. If I progress again as much over the next few years I may stand a chance at this airbrushing thingy.

I start with the eyes to help see the soul of the animal. Start with layering of Illustration black paint and then start scratching in the fur. I used an aggressive erasure
    1.JPG 3.JPG

Next I add a little color, put in some blurred background to help establish the focus points of the tigers face. The color on the snout, I feel, was not what I was expecting. It also was Wicked Paint which I had a hard time scratching because it just felt harder or dried quicker than the Illustration paint. It did however provide a good base for future layers.
    4.JPG
More layers of different Illustration colors while continuing to scratch in different types of fur. Very short on the snout, medium hair on the top of the head, long fur around his main. Besides the aggressive erasure, I start using a 2mm fibre pen to soften the hard scratches where needed
    5.JPG
I am still trying to get the color right I try Illustration burnt Umber, Umber mixed with red violet, Burnt sienna, maybe a little Sepia. Here's a little tip: Sepia has a green tint to it, if you spray it all of your orange colors suddenly dull down. More color theory, right?
    6.JPG
Added in some background which helps bring out the whites around the eyes. I use a Frog tape around the perimeter to help with a clean edge, however , it only comes in green which will drive my eyes nuts when I am trying to match orange colors. I also know that the portrait will brighten when this tape is removed
    7.JPG
A lot of work on the paws, multiple layers trying to get depth into the fur. The paws are also another focal point 8.JPG
Remove the tape, stand back and check the values 9.JPG
Add the whiskers and call it DONE.

Compare 1st tiger with the latest tiger

Thank you Marcos, I see many artist struggling as newbees, I wanted to show how hard work pays off. Not to say I am complete but also a work in progress.

    LOL, you're so funny
Just curious as to what the time is between then and now (you didn't date the original) ? it will be a good guide unless its taken you 40 years to get to 'now' in which case I'm packing up my toys now !

@Rick Martin, This is a great step by step to show you how fur comes together :)
