So I've got a fleet of tow trucks to paint, plus signage and some "storefront" glass. The main colors will be black/white, NHTSA yellow and possibly some orange.
Otherwise I'm pretty much allowed to design what I want.
Other than A chainhook what are some symbols or imagery that comes to mind??

I'm stuck with pretty simple images unless i wanna give the work away. Probably limits me to the chain hook but you never know what a geniusly creative group will come up with.

I see an I in the image of a person(maybe lower case with the dot on top) pulling a cart that says haul on it, keep it somewhat simple for budget and readability.

    It’s a bit of a tough one.
I guess if it’s the second variant you could go with making the “i” a character with arms, the “-“ a rope and the “Haul” on a bit of an angle towards the i , giving the idea he’s dragging it?

I was doing logo's years ago for customers and it was pain in the we know what. Usually, customers didn't have a clue what they would like. I needed to create few different versions or ideas and then we went from there. The important part was also, how you show your customer logo so he can get a "feeling" how it will look in real world. But making without customer approval was a big no no. Cause you could spend bunch of time and customer wouldn't like it. Not to mention how finding font which they like was a mission impossible sometimes.

I was so tired of that crap with fonts, that one day I made picture, just so I can make easy to my self. Still have this stuff on my disk as a memory.
    Here is picture about fonts:
Font styles.jpg here is example how I presented them to ''customer'':
this logo was a gift to one forum member. He needed idea for his cnc machine:
    moonboog2.jpg

I am not expert, but I did few of them. But either way I wouldn't do any logo without ''customer'' green light. There is just to many variables which can get wrong. Not to mention you gonna spray that on trucks? Good luck with removing stuff if they don't like it. We didn't touch corporate identity. You will use some font for example for your logo and they use in their business totally different fonts and at the end the whole business will look like a mess.

As far what you can do with text, guys mentioned few ideas already. You can also make a truck which tow the name of the company. Or animal which do that like bee which I posted before. Or whatever. sky is the limit. It depends of idea. But it would be a shame you would make a masterpiece for you and your customer wouldn't like it. I sold few logos which were damn ugly to me, but I didn't sell many logos which were damn good looking to me.

edit: one more thing. Let's say you will make a logo which they will like on their trucks. You can expect they will wonted to put it on different stuff like t-shirts, stickers, paper and so on. You will need vector file for that.

I like it, simple, effective, not really creating a logo...it works. Especially since the idea is to raise awareness and many people will not recognize a rollback nor instantly know what type of business Ihaul is. Just a silhouette tow truck towing Ihaul. I'll see if he wants to add wheels on Ihaul

His only request was to include something that tells people its a towing company in the paintjob aside from the simple name and phone number.
Every idea i've presented he's said yes to....so it should be easy as design goes. LOL
He's well aware that if he wants to make any changes there will be charges associated.

    Vector files Pshh...too easy.
