Taking a quick break from the dolphin because I wanted to play with an idea... using poster card coated in black gesso (because I wanted a black surface) I cut out a stencil based on this photo. The size is about 75 x 100mm (about 3" x 4" 20151008_184816.jpg

So out with the white. The paint is Golden high flow and my brush is an Iwata eclipse with the 0.38mm needle. I sprayed the areas I wanted really bright the heaviest.

Now, the coffee... I drew this one yesterday and tried to post it to @haasje dutchairbrush but my phone was being cranky... this is a double shot into a single shot - serious flavour...

OK so I then free handed in a couple of areas the stencil couldn't get and establishes the eyes and a couple of dark lines for good measure.

I added some plants because that is important... erased a couple of areas to bring them out and defined the eye

Time for colour. I'm using transparents and I'll start with yellow, then the blue, then the red, then I mixed a red orange to darken up some areas. For the plants I used pthalo green, then a darker sap green, then some dark brown (maybe burnt umber...?) for some depth and the log on the lower right.

Then the most fun bit... making it pop... a bit of shading grey along the bottom and in a little behind the dorsal fin and hey hey, all done. Coat of varnish (which subsequently blushed because I was too rushed and it's cold here tonight - in the hot water cupboard 20151008_203505.jpg you go...) and we're done!!

Wow you are starting to come in to your art brother. That looks awesome! But hey where do you get one of those special .38 needles?

Thank you very much! Maybe it's a 0.3... there are two sizes, a 0.5 and a 0.3?? Mine came with the smaller size and I got a 0.5 needle and nozzle. I think you can still get them on amazon but I understand they are no longer made.

I like the detail and colors of the fish :).

It might have been an idea to do the background first though (and as the fish has hard outlines masking that). The background is now either around or broken up by the fish (center plant stops slightly beneath the fish and starts slightly above the fish as you didn't want to hit the fish when painting that). if the fish had been masked you could have painted over it getting a nice continues plant behind it.

o_O Oh thanks for the coffee

Yes, I've got some frisket on the way to assist with such things. This was a lot ad hoc - try out an idea but it was so quick and simple that I will definitely be doing it again.

I was just thinking about it, a good accurate (even if simple) background lends so much to the realism of a piece. I suspect it is in much the same way you can notice the difference in music quality sometimes but couldn't tell what it was... Hmmm, understanding the human mind at work...

I would suggest sealing with the acrylic sealer or some acrylic medium with the paper however it may warp the paper. Also lay down the art with a white just as if doing a monochrome painting and then work in with your color other wise if you try to do straight transparent over the black you will end up with terrible color shift. Also heat cure with a hairdryer in between layers. This is the same way I do work on a black T-Shirt.
