    Hello friends,

i promise a sbs description of my Marlene2 portrait.

I hope you can follow all steps and understand my writing.

If you have any questions or critics please tell me!

My airbrush is a H&S Evolution two in one. Usually i use the 0.2 setup.

I reduce the Schmincke Black 1:1 with water and the pressure is 30 psi or 2bar.

The substrat is a Schöllershammer No.4

I learn my basic skills with a Revell Gun.

A big step forward was the Evolution gun. Smother handling and soft mechanism make the painting more easyly.

    But now the sbs!

First the reference! Study the picture and planing the work.

    1 Marlene2 Referenz 2.jpg

For the right shapes i use a mask (stencil). I cut it out of a print in original size.

    2 Schablone total.jpg

I cut the stencil inside and outside of the contour, so i can use it positive or negativ for spraying.

    3 Schablone Detail 1.jpg 4 Schablone Detail 2.jpg

Then I spray the darkest areas of the pictures. That helps me to orient in the picture.

    5 Schablone gesprüht 1.jpg

After that i start with the background left and the shoulder, this area is not in the focus, also unsharp.

    6 Background 1.jpg

With the stencil i check the lightness of the colors and do some precise.

    7 Check Background.jpg 8 Work on Background.jpg 9 präzisieren Detail.jpg

Then i begin to shading the arm.

Shadow needs light, so i erase some light areas of the blouse.

    11 lightning arm.jpg

Now I went to the face and hair and spray first shadows to „built“ the face.

    12 first step face hair.jpg

And always check your reference picture for the right shapes, shadows and textures.

    13 check referenz.jpg

I give the hair structure with the airbrush.

    14 more hair.jpg

Next step is the first light of the lips and chin, i scratch and erase these spots.

    15 scratch light lips.jpg 16 erase kinn.jpg

Continue with the nose and face shading, it needs concentration!

    17 spray face.jpg 18 shading nose.jpg

For the textures i use a eraser like a pencil. I do figure8 turns with the eraser. After this shading again!

For precising i use the face-stencil again.

Now one of the most important steps. He gives live to the portrait, the eyes!

Detail work is a challenge! I use eraser and knife for lights and the black pencil (Polychromos) for fine details.

    22 shading eye.jpg 23 erase eye.jpg 24 scratch eye.jpg

So on with the forehead and the other eye.

Defininitly important is the hair with all the different structures, the lights and shadows.

I give the hair depth with shadings and lights. I love my red eraser, he is old and hard, but perfect for this job!

    29 shading hair.jpg 31 hair unfinished.jpg 32 erase hair.jpg 33 scratch hair.jpg 34 detail hair.jpg

I look for faults and check the reference again

I take some photos from my portrait, so i see it with the eye of another. After a lot of corrections i finished Marlene.

    35 Marlene2.jpg

All in all I need 10 hours to paint.

    Thank you!

Great SBS, I also always use the figure if 8 technique for erasing skin texture and find it is very effective. Thanks for taking the time to put this SBS together.
