I just placed an order through Amazon for the exact items you used in your video. Here soon I will try to make my own boards as well. A big thank you to you, beanpoleUk and anyone else whom has posted about this recipe and it's results

My next board I may go a pinch lighter on the glue so it is a bit easier to sand. Not a lot lighter though, I don’t want the clay too fragile. Instead of a full tablespoon maybe 3/4 tablespoon.

Quick few questions because i’m going to buy the stuff to make a few of my own boards to try if you don’t mind Fred?
Titanium dioxide, I have found food grade for colouring icing, other grades for. colouring soap.......etc is it all the same basically?
It seems to me it’s just a pigment but I don’t want to get the wrong stuff as I can’t get the exact stuff you are using as i’m UK based.

I found the glue but the kaolin clay I will just have to buy and try, I found one that claims to be 100% pure and superfine so will buy a kg to try.

Last question with the birch plywood, here it is rather expensive so is there other wood you could suggest? I think I read on an earlier thread you could use just mdf which would be cheaper in the long run while i’m experimenting with making my own. Is all wood archival or is it just certain types?

Lastly thanks for the video Fred it’s very very informative

Glue, I think it was @beanpoleuk used PVA for the glue.

Board wise, MDF should be fine. Perhaps put a sealer over it first. The commercial claybord is on a hard pressed board, that dark brown stuff... maybe made with formaldehyde...

Yeah it was pva glue that i have bought, it was the same stuff Fred used in the video.
Wood wise I found a shop on amazon that sells a4 sheets of 4mm thick birchplywood that are for arts and crafts which is due for delivery Friday.
Fingers crossed this week I shall be making a few of my own boards to try.
I have bought some ampersand 5*7 for mitchs eye, cat and the german courses so will be good to understand what differences there may be from store bought to home made clayboard.
Looking forwards to getting going, i’m having so much trouble working on synthetic paper that it will be nice to try another surface.

Sorry I haven’t been on as much this week. Working on a painting and taking care of the Grandkids.

I would get the Titanium dioxide that is for coloring soap.

If Birch plywood is too expensive then definitely go to MDF board. There is also in my DIY store a whole white washed eucalyptus board that is archival.

Lastly use the superfine grade clay. I tried the cheapest kind first and it was real gritty and caused issues with sanding and the eraser got chewed up real quick.

    Hope that helps.

Yes, beanpoleuk was who gave out the method and he was blessed to happen onto the perfect ingredients right off the bat. I couldn’t get the PVA glue he uses or the clay, so it took me a bit more trial and error. Some PVA glues have a higher bonding property like the wood glue grade, so pay attention to the surface because you don’t want it to be so hard that the paint skates off and it is too difficult to sand. If you live around beanpoleuk order the PVA he uses. I would but I would be paying double the price because of shipping to the US.
