All I can think of is Castaway and a bloodied Volleyball just thinking the name, but no, this one is a Dog with a tale. Described as an SPCA special he was a delightful looking dog full of character. His life came to a sudden end when he was mauled to death at a doggie day care center. The friend I'm doing this for is a good friend of the owner.

We spoke about what she wanted (she is a painter herself but not confident enough to try this one) and we decided on a 16 x 20" image on clayboard.

I started with an image we liked then made some changes to the ear and added some paws! I'll do a trial on a 5 x 7 poster board with CI and Golden high flow. I cut out Wilson, positioned him on the card and sketched in some other details.

So the rest of the process so far is the familiar for me... some dark colours to set the shape and positions, blcak CI. Then create some texture with the fibre brush the some sepia to bring the colours out then a brown CI colour called flesh - such a useful colour, kind of a burnt umber. Finally some white and a touch of red to do the tongue. That's pretty much Wilson.

then the background, we decided to put him against a sky and standing on a rock.

For the rock we decided to use a type of rock common out our way. I'm going to use this reference I tool when out for a wander with @Carnun back in February.

So with some sepia I started building up some rock. I'll draw it in on the clay board. Got some texture, used some splattering to get more then made some rock like lines... a couple of hours morning work. I'll finish this as make some changes to the next one. I'll make the Wilson image larger and draw in more of the background detail.

So here is the finish up of the early stage. We've agreed to make Wilson bigger, move him on the top of a rock so he stands out better. Have to wait now till the clayboard arrives. 2017-06-04 10.58.46.jpg

OK so while awaiting for the clayboard (and my new compressor to arrive) I got the reference for the rock sorted out. This is a photo from a cycle trip we did early 2016 at Lake Taupo.

That's going to be a beautiful tribute piece. I was so sad to read the story about Wilson, what a nightmare it must have been.

OK so stage 2 is about to start. I got me some clay board...

I'll project various images onto a piece of 12 x 16 paper and use them to cut a stencil to position all the details. That way I can draw to my hearts content on the paper.

I cut out some heavy paper to act as a stencil. I'm going to cut 2 of Wilson and use one as a full cover and the other as a stencil. I projected the Wilson image, got it to the right size and marked out the detail. I used a second image to get the paw detail and a third image for the right (Wilsons' left) ear.

Then I projected the rock image up and got the right size and location. I marked the rocks, plants and even managed to get my daughters handle bars in the rock shapes... Can you see the ghostly Wilson...?

Got the stencils at least partially cut. Hot to use my swivel knife as well. Birthday present from my lad. Good choice.

Got my needles sharp... now to bust out the eclipse, then the micron to do the sky. I used a 109% reduced trans blue and started putting in the clouds. I got some detail spraying through some batting. I'll go back in tomorrow and put in some shadow. See my skyhands...

Now quick thought, I don't want the sky detail to detract. Difficult to tell at the moment but do we think the sky is too busy?
