This is a novelty helmet for fun. It was flat black to start. I sanded to give the primer bite. Laid down primer then layed a guide coat. Wet sanded with 600 and as you can see i have fine scratches. This being my firat paint like this ever my questions are this.

How do i eleminated the scratches before air brushing?

Should i lay more primer?

Is base coat thicker then prumer, and if so would a base coat help the minor scratches disapear?

I would have sanded with 2000 grit, panel wipe and let rip with the airbrush as most of the little scratches will disappear when clear coated:thumbsup:

yes 400-600 is for really cutting it back, id go with what the dude says, give it another sand with at least 1200 and the clear will cover all those and you wont even know they are there

So if they disapear with water im ok but if i can see when wet the clear wont hidem?

If it still looks like it does in that picture I would give it another sand with at least 1200 that will get rid of all the big scratches and clear will defo cover anything left over

Ok thanks and that pic is dry wet ya can still make them out. I had planned to prime sand prime so im doing no extra planned steps. Just getting some info before second prime. I had thought about going with 1200 or higher sand before painting.

I'm doing a skid lid at the moment and personally I key the surface then prime and then sand with 1200-2000,this is where it sometimes differs, for this one I'm putting on a basecoat and then clear coating then I will key the surface and airbrush after again I will clear coat. For other lids I will airbrush direct onto base coat and finally clear coat.Good luck and have fun

What do you mean by key surface? And ya im doing a novelty skid lid.

Looks good! All advice is right on!! And stencils on a helmet....have fun lol. I use automotive masking (frisket) draw it out, and then cut my lines. OR,....If the stencil is all some have, you can reruce your paint down ALOT, and "dust" your paint on each part of the stencil (cause ya gotta move it), and then once thats done, fill in the blanks ;)

Actually i used vinyl and stuck it to the helmet.

Something I've found useful is that clear school textbook covering stuff that's removable , it's like 3 bucks US and you get a crap ton of it on a roll. Flexes good just make sure you don't stretch too much it'll deform easily.
