Gesso Board

Ok i got some gesso board sanded it with 800. My question. Is there something im not doing right to get the first layer on. I start with my base reduction 6:1 but first layer shoots out like its water with no paint added.

It sounds like it is too thin. It definitely is not anything to do with the gesso board.

Just remember that once reducer is added to paint it reduces the ability to work it with erasing. Because of the Addison solvents.

That is correct. Thin paint gets absorbed into the the porous surface and you can't get it out with erasing. Thick paint sits on top of the surface. If you need it to be transparent, use transparent base.

Make sure you wipe the board down with iso, wax and grease remover or something similar.
I had a problem just like this on my homemade clay boards and once I cleaned them the problem went away.

6:1 for comart is definitely to thin. I was able to shoot it straight from the bottle threw my .18 micron at 15-18psi.
If your trying to dilute the color then use a trans base, CI trans works fine with comart.

By iso you mean alcohol. I have 99% at the house. I will stop by the parts house on the way home and see if they have water based degreaser

The iso alcohol will be fine to degrease the gesso board, you don't need to buy a dedicated w&g remover.

Ok sounds good.going home later and sanding the one i started down and gessoing it again. The others i will wipe sown.

Depending how many coats you put on you might be able to just sand it with 600 and start painting again without reapplying gesso.
The clayboard I sand until perfectly smooth and finish with 1200 but I use a machine so the sanding only takes a few seconds.

I had the same problems as airbrushdreams and that's now way I use diy clayboard or add a small amount of rabbit skin glue to my store bought gesso to make it less absorbable.

I would get the etac EFX from usa airbrush if that's the paint you want to use.

If you want a less absorbable substrate than look into the RSG.

Rabbit Skin Glue. from memory you can buy granules and melt it.... not 100% sure, never had the need to go that far lol
