Hello everyone. Mr.Micron suggested I introduce myself, so here goes.

In the 70s and 80s I did Fine Art at Bournville College of Art, Trent Polytechnic and later did an MA in the Royal College of Art's Cultural History Department. I did the odd drawing ever since, but little more.

Last year I bought one of those cheapo compressor and airbrush kits with the thought that I could use it for micro-retouching on cars.

Then I thought I could/should find out what the airbrush was really capable of, so I picked up a few books for inspiration, and acquired a few "real" airbrushes, and so it begins! Nothing, absolutely nothing, is as simple as it might first appear!

Of "real" airbrushes I have an Iwata Eclipse HP - SBS, an Iwata Revolution BCR and an Aerograph Super 63. I've also got a couple of Aerograph Model As, which are in need of urgent repair! All of these wee bought second hand.

Of them, the Revolution tends to be used for fairly large areas, the Eclipse and Aerograph for smaller scale stuff. While the Aerograph is capable of fine work, it's much more cantankerous than the others.

I generally work on stretched paper - watercolour paper for "fine" stuff, lining paper (I'm not sure if you have it outside the UK, but it's a paper used by decorators underneath wallpaper, traditionally hung horizontally, to smooth rough surfaces) for rough or freehand work: lining paper is very "hairy" and does not suffer hard masking, but it is absurdly cheap!

I use tube acrylics, often the cheapest I can find!

Pics of paintings when I have something worthy!

Welcome to the forum, fingers99! Lots of people here to offer advice / help when needed. See you have some nice airbrushes that should work pretty well. Interesting that you use tube acrylics. May or may not work depending on how finely ground the pigments are compared to your nozzle aperture and how the paints are thinned.
Anyway, have fun and spread the love !

Hi fingers99, nice to see you! Sounds like you have a great background in art that will serve you well for airbrushing :)

Can I suggest that you buy yourself some proper airbrush paints as they will help you progress a lot easier! I started with tube paints and some ab medium and thought it was working ok then I bought some proper paint and couldn't believe how much easier it was. They are reasonably priced and go a lot further than you think :)

Looking forward to seeing your work, cheers,
Mick

<edit> HellBird beat me to this post about the tube paints so my post might sound like I didn't read his first ;) </edit>

Welcome from Australia,
I will echo the comments above about getting some 'proper' airbrush paint & reducer. Etac and Com-art are very newbie friendy and will lessen your frustration initially trying to find the sweet spot.

You have the background, you have the tools so post up what you've got, if we waited for everyone to post up something 'worthy' we would never see anything :D

lollol "OzAirbrush", no worries! I figured a lot of members may or may not want to counsel :whistling: new folks on suggested equipment, etc... even paints ;)
Having "fun" trying desperately to teach my non-dominant hand how to use an airbrush as my normal "go-to" hand's shoulder (the left) isn't up to much repeated back and forth movement yet/still.

Hi Fingers, Bournville isn't too far from me so I'm guessing your in the West Midlands unless you have moved of course. You have some good airbrushes, I have 3 super 63's. Needles and nozzles are available and I have the stripdown instructions if you need them I think i posted them on the forum somewhere. Anyway tube paints aren't the best due to the course pigment grind but there are lots of paint to use depending on what you want to do. Plenty of talent, experience and good advice here. We try to help as much as possible. If you get stuck, have a look in the search first and if you cant find what your looking for then post it up.

I have just started using the "Airbrush Series" waterbased paints from Mick Neill/Airbrush Academy, They flow through the Super 63 straight out of the bottle and are reasonably priced plus he is only in Walsall but does post.

enjoy your stay with us

Its not too bad once you get it. I can airbrush left handed, not as good as right handed but i can do a pretty good job. With not too much practise you should be good to go. A bit like driving a left hand drive car when you drive on the right. You soon get used to it.

I've long since become a Brummie in exile (Nottingham, London, Leeds, Sheffield, Chester and for 20 years +, Liverpool), though I still have family in the area. I may give some "ready-mix" a go, but to date I've had little problem with clogging, and having the cheapo "Crafts 4 All" stuff means I can always use it with as paintbrush. What I'd like - and it's probably impossible - is the durability of acrylic with the instant opacity of gouache.

Maybe we should call you 'the wanderer'
can i ask you to pop your current geographic location in your profile, it makes it easier for us to suggest local suppliers for anything you may need.

Liverpool, JackEb i think. Marissa Oosterlee mentioned that etac efx were based on gouache. I use them too, they are quite delicate but great paints.

Welcome Fingers! Looks like everyone had you pretty well covered with the initial stuff. But I’ll second posting up some work sooner rather than later. I’ve been here since August and haven’t yet painted anything “worthy” LOL. But I have posted lots of stuff. I was amazed at the advice I received without knowing I needed it, just from people seeing what I’d done. Don’t be shy Mate, you’ll find this a very encouraging, helpful place to post work.
