I have been watching and reading, watching and reading. I am restoring a 1974 BMW 2002 and decided to do a whole color change. The most challenging part being the engine compartment, with the block and brake booster still in. I have ordered some hight quality custom color matched acrylic enamel (which was what the factory used in the seventies). But access to all surrounding areas is challenging and with just the spray cans, too many inaccessible nooks and crannies. Soooo, I will be learning yet one more thing in this lifetime; airbrushing. Thanks to Mr. Micron I am assured that airbrushing acrylic enamel will work. Next, finding a relatively low cost airbrush with a wide spray pattern and a compressor set up. I am very excited as the videos show such nice work. Here is a pic of the car in the color I am changing to. And hello and thanks to everyone.

Thank you, Chuck. Mine is currently a dark red or maroon called Malaga. Have spent the last three months since purchase, redoing a variety of mechanical and electrical systems. Time to paint the engine bay and inner nose while everything but the block is out of there. Airbrushing seems to me to afford me access to some of the tough to reach places and end up with a professional looking job. Im having a ball :)

I'll recommend a gsi ps290 if you want a small round ..or couple inches fan pattern.

Senco pc1010, Hitachi ec28m, or one of the California airs would all make a good compressor for such a beast.
Assuming you're in the US.

UK...well you guys have terrible compressor choices....for the most part.

I suggest looking for a airbrush with at least a .5 nozzle set up in it.
You could also look for something like this TR series which looks more like a mini mini spray gun http://www.coastairbrush.com/proddetail.asp?prod=Revolution_HP-TR2
But look for something within your budget , I am mainly thinking about how you will either be laying over the engine bay or under it to spray the areas you need to get to.

I know you will be I have worked on BMW's before while they are not as bad as some Porsche's they still are not an easy one to work on .
I use to collect bug eyed sprite's and Mg midgets about 30 years ago they were fun to work on LOL Now I just working on a Classic 54 Pontiac 2 door HT.
That is what got me into wanting to learn to airbrush so I could do the entire car myself, Turning a wrench and the autobody is the easy part for me but I had no ideal on airbrushing the graphics on it and the only local airbrush artist close to me is one way over priced and two I was no too impressed with his work.
I think after you car restoration you may find your self wanting to learn more to do with the airbrush like I did. While I am a lot better then I was when I started I still suck at it but I love it too much to stop:D
 
Welcome Scott. I can second the GSI 290 suggestion. It’s a fantastic quality brush for a great price. It has a .5 Needle / Nozzle combo and as well as producing the usual cone shaped spray pattern, it also comes with a different cap to produce a fan like a regular spray gun.

Thanks for all your input. Are syphon guns a poor second choice for a cry engine bay? I thought the larger cup on them would be a real plus. What is the largest cup for the gravity feed guns? Can any one guestimate square footage coverage of 1/2 oz of paint? Forgive me if my questions reveal my near complete ignorance!

A neo trn2 wouldn't be a bad choice either.
Side feed..so you can spray any direction even straight up. Even held upside down.
Also comes with a large siphon feed bottle.

Not the highest quality of some other suggestions but not bad.
Also not $300+ which is what you'll spend on those features in any top quality brush.

Some harder and steenbeck gravity have optional cups that are pretty massive.

Your coverage will be no different bc that is really dependent on the paint so as lomg as youre using AE I'd guess around 6square inches per 1/2oz by the time your coating thickness is reached.

But the tendency will be to go thin using an airbrush so you'll probably stretch that close to double.

Idk if the purple harbor freight 4oz detail gun will fit but it's a decent cheapy mini gun that's worth a shot.
Also side fed so easy to adjust to any position.

Most of the really small mini guns like the harbor freight or the gun it attempts to copy lph50 use upwards of 3.5cfm , though typical is more like 1.5-3cfm.
With the actual lph50 ($300) running 1.8cfm

This then becomes roughly your bare minimum compressor size, just barely able to keep up for a long time yet with a mini you won't spray for long anyhow.

With the 2hp models being adequate for pushing a mini gun for usually as long as you'd like.

Not a full size compressor, but a jump up in size for sure, these are also very quiet models.

For noisy there are tons of 2hp compressors for around $100 that would do the job.
