Intercoat clear

hey all. I have been airbrushing for about a year and have never used intercoat. Most of my projects are done in a single sitting but now I am working on larger projects that are worth more and want to make sure I am doing things right. I have been in the Autobody industry for years and have a lot of experience painting and have never used intercoat. Any thoughts on this?

If you're not expecting a big lapse in between working on it then basically you don't need it, with the exception of candies.

The waterborne paints you don't need it anyhow. It does help though if it's gonna sit around long enough to get dusty.

Gotcha. Yeah I use Wicked and I also use PPG Envirobase water paints because well it’s easily accessible for me. Thanks for the help.

I think envirobase has an open time .... 24 hours? If I recall.

No idea if that's practical reality or just one of those specs they use to cover their own butts ...


Wicked collects and holds on to dust like crazy so after just a few days in most environments the colors start to be effected..... Not terribly noticable but it's there.

I have limited experience, but I’ve had no problems leaving a piece done in waterbourne for days in end. Solvents I Intercoat when I’m done for the day, but that’s more to do with taking care of the artwork. I’ve laid down some Intercoat purely to protect before taping over top.

I've just brought some of this Liquitex satin varnish. The guy I got it from uses it as an intercoat and as a final coat to protect the work.

water bourne paints has no window, It can sit for weeks , use a tack rag and wipe dust off , a intercoat clear is the same as if you spray a coat of 2k clear upon your colors but it dries faster,, this is usually done to lock the base color or whatever ,, if you make some mistake and have to wipe off the artwork it will not affect the basecolor, this is a smart thing to use,, I lay down my base colors and spray 2k clear over ,, after that I do the artwork,,,if I fail I don't have to start from scratch,,, just start over with the artwork,,i use ICI/Nexa aquabase

I use transparent base as an intercoat when masking artwork with tape. The tape tends to peel off the paint (especially overspray) while removing it.

One vote from me too on transparent base. Since that, 1-2 light coats with 2k clear, sand and stay out of troubles.

As some of the others have mentioned, if the paint system you're using doesn't have a window there's really no need for intercoat unless you wish to protect artwork for some reason. If the paint system you're working with does have a window and you're in danger of losing the chemical adhesion, you can spray intercoat and then scuff the intercoat to create mechanical adhesion before proceeding.
