Paasche Type V questions

Greetings, first post here. I recently bought a used Paasche Type V and cant quite pinpoint why it wont work. It pushes bubbles into the cup and either wont spray, or takes coaxing to spray and spatters/cuts out

I also noticed that air cap body leaks air at the connection with the brush body. Is this body a different body for each tip size? I have a size 1 tip and the tip body hangs up on it rather than scree all the way down.

Any help is appreciated, I'm having a ton of trouble finding info on this brush

I've got errands to run, but will be back to fill this post in with some help- I will take photo's as well... The bottom line is that your nozzle cap is not tight enough to get a good seal on the nozzle cone in the brush body. They can be a little temperamental, and vary a little with the age of the brush - it is a bit more difficult to get the older ones to work well with newer parts. Be back later...

Thanks! Something didn't seem right when I put it all together with new parts. Glad to hear it wasn't 100% my fault.

While you wait for Dave to run his errands you can hope over to the introduction section and tell us about yourself
You can find that area here https://www.airbrushforum.org/introductions/
The leak around the air cap may also be what is causing you bubble in the cup. putting a bit of bees wax or chap stick on the thread that hold on air cap on should fix the air leak there. That is also what is causing the suction issues of paint

A bit of this information is going to depend on the age of your particular "V". They have been making them for a very long time, with only minor revisions to the design over the decades - unfortunately, those revisions can be a make it or break it deal with some of them. Bubbles in the cup, or paint backing up into the brush on a Paasche V is almost always the lack of a seal at the base of the nozzle cone in the brush body. When I assemble these pieces I generally use some sort of a sealing material in a few areas - for most of this, normal, everyday chapstick will work wonders. I start by slipping the nozzle onto a toothpick, and applying a small amount of wax (chapstick) around the lower portion of the taper on the nozzle that will fit into the brush body.

After placing the nozzle into the taper in the body, and checking that not too much wax will squish out, I then apply some to the threads of the nozzle cap. If there is going to be a good bit of squish out, or if it looks like the air passages may get blocked, I use the tip of a toothpick to clean things off before proceeding.

Same goes for the air cap - a light smear of wax onto the threads before installing it.

I assemble the parts and snug them up, but do not go overboard tightening. The wax should deal with creating a good seal on each of the parts. I test to see if I was successful by drizzling soapy water over the joints while releasing air - no bubbles should form if I did a good job sealing. Bubbles or foam will appear in the joints if I missed...

The head parts are generally marked with some sort of a line to indicate size. The base nozzle cap is the same between sizes, but the air caps have either one line, or two on them. These should correspond with your cone, and your needle. In addition, over the years they made changes to the specs on some of these parts, so it is better to try changing them as a complete set of parts, rather than mixing and matching. I have had a hard time getting the newer #1's to work on older brushes, as the air cap will sometimes completely shut off the air flow through the head. I have, however been fortunate enough to find new/old stock on many of the older pieces to keep my older "V's" singing along in style. The number 2 sets seem to work more readily on older brushes.

It seems I have an old brush that doesn't play nicely with new parts. I have a #1 set that I just bought and a #2 that came with the brush. The #1 only pushes bubbles into the cup. The #2 works with seemingly normal control over fluid flow, but it spits really bad. I'm (obviously) new at this so it's pretty frustrating to chase through some of these issues.

Edit: After sealing better the bubbles went away but still no spray. Back to cleaning, it must be plugged somewhere inside

Water is all I've tried since I got it. I just cleaned it thoroughly and got some pink gunk out. Hooked it back up wet from the cleaning and still no fluid. Nozzle seals seemingly fine. I did get bubbles through the slot that the trigger rests in, however. Spits really bad, admittedly a poor descriptor. It sprays water but has fast, even tempo skips at any pressure I ran it at between 5 and 40 psi. The skips slowed down with pressure but remained in a rhythm.

There is basically no seal between the air valve beneath the trigger and the brush body, so a little air here is no big deal. the nozzle needs to be clean inside, as does the brush body from where the paint is sucked in from the color cup forward to the head. I usually soak older, used brushes in alcohol or Createx Restorer for some time, and use small brushes to get them scrubbed out a bit... If you are on facebook, I can provide a few links to some stuff I have written about them

I had some success with my V's wrapping teflon tape around the threads where the air cap mates to the body. Sadly I've never been able to get my VJR to really work. Someday I'm gonna throw it in a box wrapped in a C-note and send it to DaveG! :) with a handwritten note that just says HEEELLLPPP!!!

just write a big "C" on the note, and that will be good enough Jurien ;)
