Paint for light shading ?

Hey fellow airbrush girls and guys !

I have now got my equipment and i am ready to start painting apart from waiting for my paint to arrive.

I have a newbie question that id really like some advice on.

What type of paint is used for shading in portraits and things like that i am talking about the black and grey style.
I have opaque paint in black and white on its way but was thinking i need some semi or transparent paint to create the look. Unless you can reduce the opaque black ?

I am after a real light shade to map out the portrait first then build from there.

Thanks for your time

Pete

I use transparent shadow gray or transparent black and add it to a transparent base to make it even more transparent.
At least that is the way I do it everyone has there own way.

I use transparent smoke or if I paint with a light gray I just add some black to white till I get the color I want

Okay would this be transparent or opaque paint? Thanks you
Wicked makes a Transparent Smoke which is about like Golden High flows Shadowing Gray transparent. On the Gray scale that is Opaque and just making your own grays. 1% black to 99% white for the lightest gray.

I see you already got some good answers and if you want to go for black make sure you make it transparent enough I use 1 part paint to 20 parts transparent base when I use a opaque color like black or white and remember you still dont have a transparent paint or even a semi transparent paint but it it takes much more layers to reach the max saturation
