Flakes, pearls and other expensive dust!!! or ... ???

I'd advise to by all types for choosing smth for certain work. Plain black are just black flakes, but those holographic are totally different in appearance, for certain work one might be more suitable, than another.

This picture maybe would say a bit more about how they look, but it's not what they are in reality under the sun.

Cool, Simon!

Never thought it could happen. 0.8 through 1.0! It's good to know. Now I can be sure that 1.3 will work well for many sizes, at least from 0.1 to 0.6 and, as your experience shows, even 0.8:)

Cool observation!

That's why I thought to use slow thinner for the reason binder wouldn't dry too fast and we'd have more window to work with wet layer.

That's what I thought about. In the video below another option is shown for better control.

These words "more intercoats" I do not like:( That means thick paint layer, it's no good.
Sweet spot should be found, as not only the effect we need, but also right paint layer thickness.

Smart idea came to search on youtube:D
At one shot found the same u-pol gun I mentioned above used as flake buster. Nothing was done with the gun. It works without any improvements! (But I will not be me, if I wouldn't do anything with the toollol). The guy shows that it works.
Keep your shoes protected! It shows that regulators must be installed.

Below there are two busters, that provide smarter control. Valve is added to the flake flow either. I like the idea much! That's what must be installed in the buster.
I think these are basic designs that should be considered.
One thing bothers me, there's no tube going to the bottom! I think, built with the tube would work better... who knows. As I understand both things are siphon type, but how siphon would normally work without the tube?o_O

This one has an interesting nozzle.

Mine it is not siphon feed, and I would guess that the flake buster either. Mine is pressure driven, air pressure goes in the bottle for one orifice and the flakes goes out for other orifice, so you need less air pressure to spray the flakes and they aren´t flying all over the place, well they just fly a little!!Flake.jpg

The slow thinners is absolutely what I will use next time. I may also go with a 2k clear to bury the flake as I think the extra thickness would reduce the number of coats needed to fully bury the flake.

I wonder what you'll come up with.

BTW, do you have some thoughts on what surfaces to experiment with the custom paints? I think that some surfaces like half of the moto tank (plastic or smth) etc would be cool to get. In the end you have demo shapes for the customers, not only flat panels. But that's another story...:)

What size flake would you guys recommend for an airbrush? Is the .004 what they call "micro" flake, or is that just a generic term?

As I remember, on PWP site they say micro flakes are suitable for using with the ABs.
I haven't used it, but what I'd use is 0.5mm nozzle or above. Who knows, maybe even 0,35 would work.

When searching info on youtube found this video, maybe it's of any interest for you.

It definitely is!

Never thought there were pressurized types of the busters until today.
Stating, that flakes don't fly away much with this type is very interesting! Now I must try this design either:) The head starts spinning about what to do.

Never thought of that orifice, dam I have to start to google and less thinking!! That must have to make a more even spray pattern!!

I have been using Aluminium sign cut offs that I get from EBay. They can be bought in different sizes and are pretty cheap. I will link the seller shortly. The idea of using tanks and things and having some demo pieces is great.

Another option of getting those cuts is to get them from companies dealing in outdoor signs. They usually have tons of cutouts they'd gladly sell for low price.
I thought, maybe I'd go to such companies in Kiev and to talk over the things. I've been at their facilities, everything's serious there! They also use machines for vacuum forming, so speed shapes etc, I suppose, is possible to order. But what quantity what they want do? It's the question...

In this video (end of 20 min) guy uses 2,5mm spray gun (DeVilbiss pri). The air beast covers fast.
They have pretty good amount of videos about flakes and peals, etc.

Mini flake buster can be used successfully for small areas. It makes sense!
One thing's bothering me:) What would happen if someone would pull the trigger with the buster on the brush, while the brush is loaded with clear (like shown in the video)!:D I mean "muscle memory" trick. I am sure, that sometimes that will happen. I'd use empty AB for these manipulations:)

That is exactly what I thought about having clear in the same brush. I used two different brushes as I didn’t trust myself to not pull the trigger back with the flakebuster attached. I’m sure it would clean up ok, but I think it would take a long time to get it clean again.

That's all about it! Just imagine how much time it requires to get the thing clean from all the things that would stick inside. Your buster's body is made from aluminum, as I understand. What material the one shown in the video is made from I have no idea, imagine if it's not solvent proof plastic. Who knows.

That’s right, mine is Aluminium. And I agree, melting a non solvent resistant body would be bad lol.

Thought about other application tools. Iwata has some!
Spraying heads LVX, LVB, WBX and paint nozzles of LPH- 400 & W-400 are designed for better work with complicated coats like metallics, pearls, chameleons etc.
LPH guns consume surprisingly low amount of air (relatively of course), taking into account that they're full size guns.

Has anyone tried smth among those below?

One can choose:)

I haven’t tried any of the larger guns as my compressor isn’t quite enough for them, but I know the bottom feed versions get used for some pearl and high metallics.

The same problem here, I haven't used full size guns as my biggest compressor can normally feed mid size guns, some full size HP and MP (RP), but not HVLP. I have new pump and electric motor and other parts, after assembling everything together compressor will fedd any HVLP. The guns are here, but no way to use them normally.

Today I have my nephew helping me wet sand the flakes panel I’m working on. It’s amazing how a little sanding brings out the depth.

I wonder what you'll say after the clearcoating the thing!:)
BTW if you'll need to apply some graphics over such paint with any tape or precut vinyl, such procedures (what you've done) are must. Without sanding at least, no tape would stick. That's what my friend told me about what to do with the flakes and graphics.

That’s the plan. I added a couple coats of 2k clear as I don’t think the flake was fully covered. It is now, so after it cured properly I have wet sanded with 800 grit to prepare the surface for taping and graphics. After giving the surface a wipe down with Pre cleaner of course.

I think I have watched everyone of Matt's videos, Spoke to him a few times to ask questions and he was quite happy to answer. The videos made me laugh most of the time and I learned quite a few things from them too.

I had 5 mins to work on the vintage airbrushes this afternoon, however while I was in the paint/computer room I took some pics of my pearls and flake. Not sure if its micro flake or not but got the smallest size I could..

This is what I have tucked away for some time in the future..
