Black surface to paint on

Hi all!

I'm pretty new to airbrushing and art in general. My next piece i want to tackle will be on some sort of black medium. What's the best surface for this if wanting to effectively erase? I went to my local art supplier and they didn't seem to have any clayboard or YUPO paper in black

Can I just base coat something in black or will that make erasing (and erasing to far) a nightmare?

Thanks in advance!

I can’t help much with an answer, but I’m going to hang around and learn myself.
I usually paint on Aluminium sign blanks and sometimes I’ll base them in Black first. I can erase back, but do have to be careful not to remove the base paint. Usually it’s a solvent black that I have put on in several layers and allowed a couple days to dry, so it doesn’t erase easy, but scratching techniques need to be very gentle.

A good black surface would be wood or canvas that you cover in black gesso. If you paint a surface and you erase and scratch, you might go through the black coating. But that depends on the quality of the surface you've prepared.

Where on the globe are you located Kyle, someone may be able to suggest a local supplier.
If you just doing practise the ‘poster board’ seems to be readily available globally, in a range of colours too - including Black. Use the glossy side and you’ll be able to gently erase, but being board you can’t go to heavy.
You can get black Aluminium Panel but like Si said, erasing can be a challenge.

Thanks for the quick replies!

I was thinking about possibly doing a signboard, putting a black basecoat down, then using a catalyzed clear coat over it? I've never done automotive art (just prime, base, clear) so I'm not sure how this is tackled with painting over clears?

I'm trying to do
pennywise-it.jpeg
and the white hair is what I'm fairly certain my only option is erasing

I'm wondering if poster board will absorb to much

I would do that on a white surface. Painting white on black shifts to blue. And I don't know how you would erase to to get to the white hair on a black back background. You can't put white down, then colour over it and erase the colour back to the white without a clear between the white and colour.

The shine side of the poster board isn’t overly absorbent
BUT
@AndreZA has given you the best advice. ! White on black will shift to blue. Just grab some white (it’s not bright white) and go for it.. from that reference the background looks more sepia than black

I would not start this one on a black surface. While it can be done you will be fighting blue shift and I am not sure what you want to erase down to on a black surface. But being Pennywise and his hair goes really light in a lot of places I think it would be better to just layout the black areas.
Cut out Pennywise and use it to keep the bright areas then spray the black and start painting Pennywise.
But you can use Yupo and Createx sealer black to base coat it in. Then start your painting or buy a black canvas but most pre gesseo'd canvas do not have a smooth coat of gesseo on them suitable for erasing.
But being you say your new to airbrush this is a big undertaking have you practiced your dots and dagger? fades and blends?
As far as the hair you can scratch it in for thinner hair.

Okay thanks! Yeah I guess my first instinct was painting with white... but I guess that comes with experience trying to deconstruct a picture, thanks for the tip!

Yeah I'm 6 weeks into but am a firm believer of just throwing myself into the deep end, figuring out where I suck and improving from there xD
I would upload some of my work but the website is saying the files are to large

Yes I usually put mine in microsoft office picture and edit it to where it is under 200kb then it will allow you to upload it.

Use scratch board if you are just doing erasing however if you want to scratch as well I would suggest paint a board with black gesso. MDF board or sanded birch.
