I finally was able to get my email confirmation taken care of so I can make this post.

Im Scott, very new to airbrushing, not so much to art have done a bit of acrylic painting and oil painting but I have never really dedicated myself to it. I do a lot of custom ice fishing rod building and have been trying to come up with a way to make my rods stand out above all the other rods, custom and production, on the ice. I never really thought about painting not only the handles but also the rod blanks themselves before until I had a customer ask me to build one for him and when I asked him what colors he would like with the thread work, he said he didn't care just make it pop. I sat for weeks wondering how I was going to make a rod POP more than it already does without using florescent thread which he didn't want. Thats when it hit me that painting the handles would really make a rod scream if its done correctly.

I had a cheap airbrush kit from hobby lobby that an ex girlfriend gave me so I started playing around with it. For anyone who has messed with those cheap kits you know how inconsistent that they can be. Well lucky for me I got caught up in the air hose one night while I was working with it and dropped it on the floor and the entire tip literally broke off. So I went up too Hobby Lobby picked up a Iwata NEO and have been painting as much as I can. A few needles and a few nozzles later I am finally starting to gain some confidence and control with it, I still suck but every day I get a little bit better and I can see how much this is going to take my rod building game to a whole new level.

Looking forward to learning from all of you and share my experiences where I can.

Welcome from Australia, where do you call home ?

we have a few lure painters here so you won’t be a ‘fish out of water’

Welcome home Scott.
The NEO is made for IWATA to their specs but is not a true Iwata But they aren't bad affordable brushes . When you're ready for a real work horse pick up one of the Iwata Eclipse CS or BCS over at hobby lobby . My CS is over ten years old and yes when I first started out I went through needle , Nozzle and even a trigger LOL . But don't think I have bought a needle for that thing in over 9 years.

I want to pick up a new higher quality brush, but at this point I can’t justify it. Once I start making some money off painting then I will definitely be looking at a second brush.

While budget is almost always a concern may I suggest https://spraygunner.com/ps770-gsi-creos-mr-airbrush-custom-0-18mm/ . While I do own a Iwata Micron CM-C+ I also bought me one of these recently and can not tell the difference in how it sprays compared to the Micron.
Also with @DaveG advice and being my CM-C+ head was in need of replacement (Neighbors sometime your got to love them ) I bought the head unit for the PS770 to put on my micron. Both are made at the same plant. Cost wise it is not much more then the Eclipse CS

Welcome Scott, glad to have you aboard. If you get stuck with anything feel free to post up pictures. You’d be amazed how quickly a picture of your work can lead people to offering the exact advice needed. Even if it’s a page of lines and dots. The best move I made as a total noob was to post pics of my work and listen to the advice. Welcome.

I have looked at this brush a few times actually. I want to make sure I learn what the hell im doing first before I spend more on a brush.

Nice background story. Welcome. If you are looking to mainly spray patterns then I would suggest an Iwata CS, but if you are looking to do details I would go for a HP-C and B.
