Talens Ecoline + Golden High Flow

I recently found an old set of Talens Ecoline colors which should be suitable for airbrushing.

My questions to you:

  1. Talens Ecoline is watercolor, hence it will fade after a couple of years. Is this correct?
  2. I want to use the Ecoline colors together with Golden Highflow (which are my standard paints), for example adding some more hues here and there. Does this “work”?
  3. If I use transperent extender from Golden, could I use this as a kind of varnish, applied over the Talens Ecoline, in order to seal it and avoid the future fade (as mentioned in 1.)?
Any thoughts, experience, suggestions would be greatly welcome!

I would probably be more apt to mix the trans extender with it...as a first try.
That would probably eliminate the issue of having the watercolor bead off of the golden in places where it has sealed off porosity.
I'd end w an actual varnish, but I'd do that w any acrylic paint.
Just general thoughts no brand specific experience there.

I think the only answer to this is 'it's complicated' - which is no help at at all! More practically:

I know from looking into working with gouache-type paints that various different colours are variously subject to fading i.e. some are more fugitive than others. I suspect that this is similar with watercolours.

I noticed on their website it says, for the ecoline liquid water colours "Store the original works of art in a portfolio for optimal colour retention" this almost certainly means that some of the colours are fugitive (i.e. if left out in the elements they will fade).

A varnish may provide some kind of UV protection which should reduce the rate at which some of the colours fade. Also putting the finished work under glass will help (a layer of glass also filters out quite a lot UV light).

It might well be worth pinging them an email to ask if they have a suggested varnish or any more information on the colours.

As for using it with Golden Highflow - this might work however I would suspect that any part of the work you have put acrylics on will be essentially impervious to the watercolour and it might just sit on top (which is probably not what you want). I don't think mixing the the two together would work...

No experience with those paints, hopefully someone will have used them at some point and they will be able to help

Thanks Robby, amc, Lee, for weighing in on this issue. Here are some of the lessons learned when I tried it out:

  • Talens Ecoline over Golden HFA: they don’t mix well together... like, not at all. The Talens sits on top of the Golden HFA, but does not get “absorbed”. This is ok for one very light layer of Talens on top, but that’s all you can do with it.
  • When I applied a bit more Talens on top of the acrylics, then it started to moisten the acrylics, transforming it into an ugly muddy puddle. What’s more, it dissolves the previous layer and you get nasty white spots if you’re not careful.
  • One cool thing I discovered however: I used Golden HFA titanium white to draw hair lines into the areas, and in some cases interesting color mixes started to appear. Something in the vain of fluorescent shining colors you would find in a Pacific Ocean beach.
The picture below hopefully illustrates a bit what I mean with this. Gotta keep experimenting with it. It does not replace a full color palette of an acrylic line, however.

Have you tried putting a bit of extender in some talens or the other way around as a mix?
The white line thing is cool, sort of like automatically painting neon lights.
Made some very unique chicks, I like them a lot!
