Acrylic paints, new source

Hi
New to this site and have a lot to learn, but most of my stuff will be mainly spraying large surfaces, so I wanted to find a source that could could give me what I needed as I have found buying the normal airbrush paints are quite expensive and you get very little bang for your buck.
So in saying that, I now buy my Acrylic paint from our local Bunnings store in 500ml containers and in any color I choose, they still need to be thinned, roughly about 50/50 mix, but for me using alot of paint it is perfect and they run through my airbrush no problems at all. Using just a cheap airbrush with 0.35 needle at about 30 psi, getting great results. these are my first Dragon Eggs with said bought paint....let me know what you think.

Thanks

Don't know how much you pay for your colors, but 1 liter of createx wicked is around 60 euros at my place. So if I would like to get primary set in liters that would be 5x60=300 euros.

You can also get smaller quantities, like half liter, and smaller.

How much you are paying for your colors?

getting great results

That's what matters! :) An airbrush will spray almost anything that is (or can be made) thin enough and free enough of lumps to pass through the nozzle, assuming you have enough air pressure. What happens when the atomised 'stuff' hits a surface can sometimes be rather more complicated!

The eggs look great!

I only $7.50 aud for 500ml, at that price I will be buying lots of them, in what ever color I can think of. :)

The result look fine, are you using a primer on the surface before you paint (what is the surface? )

If you are thinning the paint just remember you may need to drop the pressure you are spraying at to avoid runs. It can be a juggling act to get the reduction/psi right to get it spraying right

Yes I am using a primer for the paint to s it on,the surface is metal, just a light grey undercoat, and yep have worked out about the thinning and PSI, and how close to get to get the affects I need. and to finish off with a Acrylic clear coat....from local Supercheap store, works a treat on these

Great price, mentioned on another thread, check the lightfast ratings. You might struggle with detail work without finer ground pigment, but if it works for you for bigger areas and through a larger nozzle, why the heck not.

Yeah , honestly to me if you aren't doing automotive or very fine detail ( and I mean extremely fine as I can get as good of detail from my .2 w folkart multisurface as wicked) or fabric I think the ab specific paints are a bit of a waste. Decent craft paint is actually quite good..so are mid grade artist acrylics (Bigger market=cheaper better paint)
For artwork on paper well...pretty much anything we use is overkill considering my mom has stuff I did w dollar store watercolor 30 years ago and it looks fine. lol
Just imho

My oldman wonted to paint his windows with regular brush for wood and so on. And I get his call, he knows I have 1 liter of white and 1 liter of black and he wonted to use my paint for his windows -.-
I went to check how much paint for windows cost and it was a bargain, and when I told him how much I pay for my paint he almost got heart attack...

Not to mention that call of his was painfull experience to me also lol

Ab paint is a joke compared to exterior house paint. So much money has gone into development on that stuff that it's actually mind boggling the quality you get for the price.

yep wont be buying the traditional airbrush paint any time soon, not when i can get the larger lots I need for a fraction of the price, plus i dont do fine detail items, so this is all good to me......

If you see a sale or something it still helps to try it out so you get a good feel for what it can do that other paints give you trouble with and as you get into more detail you'll be able to know exactly how much your brush is capable of if everything is ideal. I mean they all have their best purposes but I definitely don't use wicked for murals or thinned out artist acrylics for a 3mm eyeball.

yeh my chubby little fingers and eyesight are not that good anymore, so fine detail stuff in way out of my league, might try my hand at some stencil work first and see how that goes to start out with......baby steps as they say hey :D

Interesting I blew through some golden paints on my Halloween props and thought how cheaper it would of been to get some reg paint to paint the base, I have an account with Sherman Williams and get paint cheap so don't know what I was thinking, dang I'm sure I have some beige paint already somewhere in the warehouse if hasn't dried up by now.

In my opinion paint has become wildly expensive, house and auto paint especially, latex has come a long way but I'm not sure it justifies the price hike, that trendy primer in paint is garbage it takes 3 coats that you can get in one with flat, I painted the inside of my aunts house and she bought that stuff I was cursing her, then she complained when she had to go buy so much of it.

They killed the booming custom paint scene with basecoat/clear coats, you could get a car painted cheap with lacquer, Maaco and Earl Schib use to paint a car for $199, usually a total excrement job but still. Now it cost 10k for a good paint job:( no wonder guys are resorting to cheap flat black paint like krylon and even worse yet vinyl, I cringe when I see the kids vinyl up their new chargers agggh

Edit I guess you can't use the s... word, my bad, I like the change fits perfect:laugh:

Maaco and them used to use AE, since most 80s cars were already AE which shooting lacquer over it just destroys it.

Lacquer has actually made a mild come back and can be found on automotive store shelves again since the 60,70,80s cars with factory AE are mostly gone and they can put it on the shelves and let people slap it over urethanes wo ruining things.
