It's not really about Rubber or Erasers
BUT
More about cleaning or keeping them clean. I found that after a short while when using on a painting I'm quickly getting a build up of paint on the eraser and then as the paint has built up it no longer affective.
I rub the eraser on the side of masking tape this works well But leaves fine grains of rubber on the end that acts like grit and a chiseled shape will leave a lot of fibers on the end that resembles a hairy brush that have to be picked of with thumb and finger nail. I also use wet and dry 1000 grit but this will leave the same problem's as the masking tape but finer.
So is their any magic trick solution to cleaning a eraser end with out destroying the nicely shaped point/chiseled end you have spent the last five min's carving
