Hi,
I would like to 'pick yout brains', if I may?
I am looking into buying a new compressor and thought the first port of call should be to ask the question here.
I currently have a pretty cheap compressor that has develpoped a fault .
I gets ridiculously hot and I have to frequently drop the power and release the pressure before it will start up again.
I currently have an Iwata Eclipse HP-BCS AB that I use to finish small scale wooden projects with a water based lacquer or varnish.
I dont want to spend a fortune on one, as I don't really use it to often, but would just like a reliable compressor.

Many thanks in advance

Simon

Check out the compressor video on airbrushtutor youtube site here...

Then, what sort of budget are you considering... my fortune may not be your fortune...

Thanks
Completely valid comment regarding the the fortune statement.
I dont really want to spend more than £100 on the compressor if possible.
I am very new to airbrushing and historically have used a brush to apply the finish, but would like to continue with the AB , as I have had way more success using this method.

Thanks again

OK, have a look at the video, you should be able to get a powerful enough (but noisy...) compressor at your local hardware store for that price.

Not a lot of options til about 150.
Other than garage type noisy stuff.

Or maybe this guy
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Airbrush-c...AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=quiet+compressor

If you can go 150 there are 6 or 9l silent compressors to be has with some hunting.
The one in Robbie’s link is pretty much the compressor I started with. I added a small desktop fan to help cool it, and meant I could airbrush all day without much trouble. If you’re based in the U.K. check out these guys too.

Thanks for the replies.
I am new to airbrushing, so have limited knowledge, thus, I am here asking questions.
I have watched the video, and found it very informative, but if possible I would like some suggestions as to recommended manufacturers/makes & models.
The compressor in Robbyrockett2's link is similar to the one I have at present, and seems to work for my needs, but I regret buying a cheap unit as I normally believe in buying the best that I can afford at the time, but in this instance I just bought a cheap unit. Lesson learnt!
I obviously have a budget, but am willing to spend a bit more (£150 ish) to get a better quality bit of kit, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks again all

Simon

These are all Chinese made good compressors. They will last much longer not because the quality is really any better but simply because you won't be taxing them much at all.

In the world of compressors, all but a few very high end brand name units that are from strictly air tool companies are just rebranded Chinese units so these are about your best choices.

Iwata,badger,paasche... All rebranded Chinese.

Silent air , Ingersoll, abec, Quincy, rolair, Eaton, champion
Are some non Chinese brands but nowhere near most hobby budgets.

Ditto what Robby has said. Getting a more powerful unit so it’s not working as hard will be a good way to go and it won’t break the budget either. For around £100, there’s any number of larger but ultimately much noisier compressors from Clarke or Sealey that would also do the trick. They’re just noisy as hell.

Sorry for being a newb and naive.
At present the connector that i attach my hose to has a screw thread , but on looking at the compressors that Robbyrocket2 has suggested, it looks like the connector on the actual unit is different to the one I have at present?
As stated in my initial post I an using an Iwata Eclipse HP-BCS AB.
Would I need to buy an alternative hose, and if so, what are the name of the connectors that I am looking at.

Thanks for all your help

You would just need the quick connector (male) to plug into the compressor (the male connector will have a 1/4 thread) and then it depends on what thread you have on the opposite end of the airbrush hose, if its 1/4 then screw it straight onto the male quick connector, if its 1/8 (same as the airbrush end) you would need a 1/4 to 1/8 reducer. Only a few quid either way.

How big are your small scale wooden projects? This can be relative... Just wondering, cause you are using bcs for small scale.

The biggest item would be a medium sized jewelry box.
I finish them with a water based PU varnish.

Cheers for all your help, I have learnt a great deal just from this thread.
I have looked into all of the above and they all seem too large for my needs.
I keep stumpling across this, and was wondering if you could advise if this unit could be a viable option, as the size and price is right for me.

I dont think I would need anything too powerful, as like I have stated in my previous posts, only use my AB for spraying a diluted varnish.

Many thanks in advance

Same as the first one I linked except minus tank and add enclosure.
So probably like the one you had except with a box around it.

It is taiwanese so possibly a more durable motor.....

Thanks,
Probably not ideal then?
Sorry for being naive, but there are so many out there.
Apart from the initial
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Airbrush-c...AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=quiet compressor
that you recommended , all the others are physically a bit too big for my storage/workspace.
I need something that one may consider as portable.

Cheers,
Simon
Welcome to airbrush compressors.
They all kinda suck honestly.

I'm guessing you initially had something like the first one but no tank?

You may just have had a bad experience. The one I have has lasted about a year pretty well.
I've even abused it a few times and almost smoked it.

You might consider a twin piston if size is that much the issue though.

These are pretty good
