Clear coat issues

Draxden

Double Actioner
Hey guys! So I finally just figured why the hell not, and got a paasche h and some splash color matte 2k clear. I messaged spraygunner site multiple times because I noticed this stuff didn't come with a reducer like the gloss kind I was going to get .they assured me it would be a out of the bottle kind of clear and they have personally seen people use it straight from the bottle multiple times. Now, I'm completely new to clear coating this way, but correct me if I'm wrong. I shouldn't be getting what appears to be "globs" of clear on the surface while I'm spraying right?

I've tried everything I can think of, from adjusting the air pressure to help atomize the clear better, on top of adjusting our much paint comes out in conjunction with that as well, and no matter what I still seem to get these glob like pieces. I'm assuming it's due to it not being reduced? I don't know how that goes with clear coats .

Thanks!

Are you able to post any pictures of the “globs”? It might help people find the problem. Sounds like you’re probably right though, but I have heard of 2k Activator doubling as a thinner. But I’ve also heard that guys using full guns would still add 5-10% Reducer to help with levelling out.

This is the best picture I could get for it.

So 2k means two part, clear:activator and would then require thinning depending on use. Looks like your gun spitting, so either needs reduction or gun has issues. Hard to see in pic but possibly an element of Orange peel too where spray begins to dry before hitting the surface.

Hmm, it’s tricky to tell from the picture, but there are some very experienced folks here who could help. My guess would be that like most paints, it will need reducing to go through a nozzle as small as airbrushes have.
Double check the correct mix, as in ratio of clear coat to activator. See if you can find anything on the manufacturers website regarding suggested pressures too.

Well, I sent pictures back to spray Gunner and it looks like their shipment processor messed up and gave me the wrong activator. So I'm hoping that once I get the new batch in I'll be fine, and it will lay down properly.

You're not making your life easy by using an airbrush for the first time clear coating.
The globs are most likely where the clear is building at the tip for a second or two then flying off onto your substrate.
As well as thinning you should be pretty close and overlapping 50-75% on each pass. have a light source on the other side of the object you're clearing and you can see the path of fresh clear being laid down.

I forgot to mention. Don't ever spray 2K without ventilation and a serious respirator and something to protect your eyes.
Definitely! I know it's a bit harder than with a spray gun, but s gun set up is out of the question right now. Unfortunately. Hoping that the new activator or I should say right activator will help. They also informed me to reduce 2:1 then go with the 5:1 mixture.

Like others have already mentioned, an airbrush isn't designed to spray a urethane clear coat. You'd be better off trying a rattle can 2k clear like this one https://amzn.to/2UOD4EE

Spray technique goes out the window shooting clear through an airbrush and you won't get close to the correct mil thickness.

I've tried the SprayMax clears on a few small panels and I'm actually a fan of their matte 2k rattle can clear. It lays down super smooth and dries dust free very quickly. I've experienced some issues with the gloss version and don't recommend it as highly, but it's better than using an airbrush.
