Hey fellow paint slingers!
Artist here from upstate NY, new to spitting paint through a brush.

I am a glass engraver, drill, etch, etc. And I started with airbrushing as a way of coloring my engravings, and immediately got hooked. I have watched every airbrush tutor and bloodshot airbrushing vid I can on YouTube, as well as a few other channels. I have a good understanding of the equipment, but being as I am completely self taught, my progress seems very slow.

I currently run 3 brushes, an Iwata Eclipse C, Neo for Iwata, and a cheap Masters .2 mil MAC detail brush. I run them all off my California Air compressor, usually around 30 PSI, though I play with pressure from time to time, I don't have a great understanding of it's effects, other than slinging more paint... Speaking of paint, I have some Createx textiles airbrush paint, which gave me a really hard time, and was the first brand of paint I got, then I tried Aztec from my local hobby store, which was surprisingly worse, but 8n a different way...then I got a 5 bottle set of illustration from Createx and I got some comart from my brush purchases, both of which work better than the other brands I've tried.

I live automotive, and eventually I'd love to get into painting bikes and cars, but I also live blasting glass, as well as just slinging paint onto canvas or my sketchpad. Anyway, after visiting the forum, I decided I needed to join, the members here seem very helpful, and so skilled to where I'm at, I hope to learn a lot here, and contribute as I grow as well.

Greetings from the ADK's!

I'm surprised Aztec gave you a hard time, it's probably the easiest one I've ever used but I like CI a lot too.

Anyhow,welcome

Welcome to the forum! I’m an automotive fan too. Createx CI, Wicked and Autoair should be ok to use. They’re not as easy right out he gate as some, but after some learning hopefully you’ll enjoy using them. Glad to have you aboard.

Welcome to the wild world of airbrushing! The most frustrating and rewarding hobby ever! Good news it gets easier and easier every day.

Welcome from New Zealand, post up some of your work! That sounds like an uncommon application of our art!

Welcome from Australia,
Like Mark said, post up some pics, we enjoy seeing what everyone is doing with their airbrushes :)

It's just that it sticks to everything, and leaves a skin when the brush empties, and so cleaning is harder and color changes take much longer, so I prefer the comart and Createx illustration so far. I have some wicked colors coming, and hope they perform well.

Will do! I'm still currently trying to get control down, but I am in the middle of engraving a free hand dragons eye that I am really going to want to paint! As for my sketches and picture attempts...a bit embarrassing at the moment!

Windex cleans it in a hurry.

Just be sure to rinse with water after.

Oh and wickeds spray performance is not gonna match comart, CI,Or aztek but it has it's strong points.

Those three are probably top 3 of everything I've tried.

I've not played with etac though, etac efx may be your ticket, seems to come close to comart for spraying yet be one of the easiest to clean.
@Ronald art could tell you more about it.

And @beanpoleuk and @Airbrush Dreams dreams, I’m pretty sure they both use E’tac almost exclusively

There are so many types, I heard that the kind without ammonia is recommended?
I'd like to give it a try, the Aztec paints spray well, for the most part, though the metallics seem extra sticky...but if I can salvage what I have that's great, I don't have a great deal of paint, and it's very limiting.

With ammonia.
Just need a post rinse with water when youre done since you don't wanna leave ammonia sitting around in brass.

The ammonia doesn't affect the chrome? Sorry, I'm not trying to be a bug, or argue it's just that the ammonia thing I have heard brought up on a lot of videos...but if I can use just normal window cleaner, dollar general sells a large bottle for like a buck. Also, do you just use it straight, or a dilution with water?
I currently use bloodshot airbrushing recommended 25% Fantastic to 75% water. It works great for most things, except cleaning Aztec paint, lol.

As Robby has said, its fine just dont leave the cup full of ammonia and walk away.

I generally dump any excess paint into the bin, wipe out with a tissue, fill with Windex, wipe the inside of the cup with a cotton tip. dump. refill and then spray out into a spray out pot (so you' re not inhaling the spray)
pull the needle and wipe down, more windex in the cup and spray out while the needle is out
put needle back - dont push the needle forward to far or you'll risk flaring the nozzle.
continue spraying out the windex, test on paper to make sure its spraying clean, then up the psi and spray out a few cup fulls of water.
done dusted and ready for action.

occasionally I'll have a clot/clog/bit of dried paint in the nozzle.....at which point I'll remove the nozzle and soak it in createx restorer (because i use mainly createx paint) after about an hour I'll use a long bristled artist brush to agitate inside the nozzle and put it back to soak.

Of all of my airbrushes I cant remember the last time I pulled any of them totally apart.

Everything will be determined by the surface you want to paint on. Illustration on Claybord or Illustration board I would strongly suggest E’tac EFX. If you are working on Synthetic Paper I would do Createx Illustration. If you are doing Automotive I would suggest HOK or Inspire H2O for solvent based and Wicked Color, Createx Illustration or E’tac Privet Stock for water based. No one sized fits all. I have been told some have used E’tac EFX on automotive but Private Stock would hold up better.
