I was perusing the hardware store and found this piece of markerboard wainscot for $10
It's just hardboard with I think some kind of smooth white enamel paint I think On it, IDK what its is but it has one side with a surface resembling a dry erase surface.

It's actually the 32x48 measurement.
I'm not certain If the 4x8 wall panel ones are the same stuff for $13
In any case After cutting It makes a good 4-8 pieces for normal sized paintings at $1-2 each. It's easy to scratch or erase from If you dont wait too long and I think it might be my new favorite surface for painting.

I use that a few times when I first started painting Picture and found it worked ok , But when I scratched my paint it also scratched the board some
which i could see after I cleared it,But Because It was when I first started it could have just been from my inexperience at scratching on a hard Board?:(:(

They used to make a similar product that the white was some sort of film laminated to the front or something much softer than whatever is on this. It would get scratched pretty easily. That may have been why. I have almost no experience with scratching and even using the wicked and aztek I don't SEEM to damage the surface?

Oh the other plus here is that as long as the paint is only a few hours old, you can scrub off areas with a wet rag if you want and do zero damage to the surface. Next day though all bets are off. So It seems to be getting good adhesion once cured.
I've only been playing on this stuff the last couple of days though, and it's not like I've ever used clayboard or anything cool to be able to compare it to either so..... your mileage may vary

I think I saw that. I know I won't know until I try using it but what is the advantage to the clayboard?
I'm enjoying painting on the markerboard as is
The clay surface absorbs the paint and ink really nice so you don’t get spidering as often unless you flood it. But it is really nice for scratching and erasing.

No it ends up about triple a layer of paint. It all depends on how many layers you put down.

Thanks AD!
I'm probably a ways off from being able to pull the kind of detail where I would benefit from the clayboard but I will eventually try it.
The fact that I'll already have a bunch of markerboard around will just be a convenience. Im loving this stuff.
If I can find it in black for the occasional project I'll be even happier.

I was thinking of using hardboard for a project panel. Wanted to cut the board to look like a large shark silhouete and then use chrome and candy2o paint to do a hotrod shark. any tips on whether this would work. I think I might need to do a primer layer .

I'm 99% positive that I've been using this for the last 6 months... I used to buy mdf and use AD's claybord recipe but I got bored of all the process. I just scuff the surface with 160 and 320 dry sandpaper and it's ready to go. Erase/scratch perfectly.

I think I will do a test with some scrap then. Mostly worried the board might warp or bend with humidity over time.

If it's a large size probably...Made something for a friend of mine, size 39x30inc., and hang it on his wall. After a month or so told me that's curved a bit. But didn't had a problem with smaller sizes. I buy the 9mm thickness ones.
