Double Actioner
Glad to virtually meet everyone here. I have been dabbling with airbrushes on and off for awhile but it’s been many many years since I got rid of my cheapo brush. A few years ago I started trying out some basic stuff with cheap spray guns and had a lot of fun doing a flake flame job on a peddle car for my son and that was the end of it, I was hooked. Since then I’ve been messing around with the spray guns a lot and want to try and push my skill set a little. I’m currently deployed so I don’t have a new brush yet, but I’m planning on getting two Eclipse brushes (both bottom feed and gravity feed) for me and my 9 year old to mess around with when I get home. My overall goal is to be able to have some fun doing hot rod style panels, helmets and other small things, maybe some bike tins in a few years with some practice. I’m planning on getting a compressor with a tank from California Airtools too because my big ole Craftsmen will be way too loud in the garage. I look forward to learning from all of you guys.

Welcome from the U.K. From the sounds of the kit you plan to buy you must have done some research already. The Eclipse brushes and the compressor will be tools that will last a life time. If you have any photos of the pedal car feel free to post them. We love seeing all kinds of different work here.

I have been doing a lot of reading and watching videos trying to figure out what was my best bet. I’ve made the mistake of buying cheap gear and just turning around and buying the nice stuff later, so I didn’t want to make that mistake again. I’ll dig up some pics of the peddle car. It’s pretty basic but it taught me a lot about brush control.

SiRoxx, As requested here are some shots of the peddle car. This was the first thing I painted and had a blast learning. Unfortunately he’s too big for it now! 17167AF0-3332-457E-9AD8-5F93E243AE46.jpeg 278F5C55-3852-4ED0-9152-44275EDA2E8C.jpeg B54A1FAC-8131-4078-8430-F2025E28AE74.jpeg

Welcome from Australia, glad to see you're including your son in your hobby, its good for everyone to have hobbies
He has been asking to learn how to use the big spray guns for awhile now, and we have been learning how to pinstripe too. He’s finally big enough to get a respirator for so I figure the airbrush would be a great way to start.

Here’s a little update and if someone could point me to the proper place for this I’d appreciate it. I got back from Afghanistan right after thanksgiving and finally got around to getting my first airbrush. I picked up an Iwata Eclipse HP-CS. I got it at Hobby Lobby so I’m starting out with the Com-Art that came in the set. I would like some pointer on my scribbles if possible. I know practice practice practice, but I’d like any and all tips. Like I said in my intro, I’m most interested in playing around with art panels and hot rod style flakes but for now it’s just dots and lines!

here’s my set up.

I was running about 25psi at the brush (measured with the trigger pushed)

And now I’m straight up hooked

Sorry about the big pics in the last post. Just figured out how to load as a file! Please let me know if I’m breaking any rules or protocols with this.

And one last question? Will this hurt my brush?

The big pictures are fine man, it makes it a lot easier to see what’s going on. And from what I can see you’re doing great! The only thing I’d point you to would be the common thing of making sure you’re moving before you pull back for paint, and shutting off the paint before you stop moving. The loops you’ve done start and finish nice though so you’re absolutely on the right track.

It shouldn’t as long as the crown cap is on covering the needle. But an airbrush stand might be better. They can be found pretty cheap on Amazon.
Yeah, I planned to pick one up but missed it on my list so that is just a stop gap until I pick one up. I also grabbed some Createx paint to try and figure out, the hot rod style is where I’d like to get to so I want to try and figure out their stuff.

Which line of their paint did you get?
