Paint compatibility during the Apocalypse...

Kim McCann

Mac-Valve Maestro!
As many places, my local area is effected by this current craziness, so I am kind of cut off from local art supplies and shipping is dodgy.

Thankfully, I have a great deal of paints on hand. I'm probably good for months.

The one thing that I am however low on, is the Illustration Colors transparent base. I however do have about a gallon of transparent base for golden high flow, and airbrush medium. I'm going to see how the CI works with the golden base when I run out. I'm curious if anyone else has tried it. I know @Mr.Micron uses Golden too, and maybe he might have tried this mix, and has any pointers? I've got autoair transparent base too... It works reasonably well but I find that it makes erasing techniques harder, as the open window is very short. The liquitex base worked well, but I only have a small bottle of it, and it will go quickly.

As many of us might be facing running low on some stuff over the next while, and most of us probably have a couple brands of paints on hand, mixing across brands or formulas might be the new normal for a while. At least until some of this chaos blows over and shipping returns to normal.

So I am wondering about people's experiences in mixing across paint brands, what they have found that works, what doesn't work, and any issues that they encountered.

Do ya have any 4030 if so use that instead of the transbase it erases and scratches better then transbaae.
I mix Golden with C.I. and wicked all the time using the 4020 reducer and I did pick up a small bottle 4012 with it off Steve Leahy recommendation and so far I haven't had seeding of the paint.

I don't have any 4030, but I have two large bottles of 4012, so this sounds pretty workable. Thanks for the advice!

@DaveG has been doing a lot of paint experimentation this last few months while testing his airbrushes, if he hasn't tried that combo then no one has.

You can also try doing lighter layer and erasing or scratching between layers.
Thanks, I generally work that way, but I find that if I lay on too thin, there isn't enough carrier left in the paint to use scratching, tho erasing is doable. This is only really an issue for things that need strong contrast lines like hair. I might try adding a drop or two of watered down golden retarder.
