Infinity CR Plus

Problem here with the infinity CR plus one fitted with the 0.4 mm nozzle and needle combination. The brush will spray paint when the air is turned on yet the needle is not drawn back. I’ve checked the needle and nozzle for deformation cracks, or other damage, but no such luck. My suspicion is that, for some reason, the needle is not properly sitting into the nozzle during operation. Does anybody have any advice for this?

I had the same thing. In my case, under a jewelera loupe at 60x I was able to see that the nozzle was very slightly flared on one side leaving a tiny gap where it met the needle. Impossible to see with even a standard magnifying lense.

Bought a new nozzle and all was good again.

On the off hand that it is just dried paint, remove the teflon washer from the nozzle and soak in createx restorer over night and then ream the nozzle with a sharpened toothpick, rinse, put the washer back on and try again. It is the most likely cause, but it is possibe that something has happened to the nozzle opening making it flare just a tiny bit. Spraygunner has affordable H&S parts.

I would definitely start by soaking and cleaning the nozzle. Even when we think they’re clean there’s often a small piece of dried paint causing the problem. Like Kim said, remove anything that isn’t metal, give it a soak and then I use a finger nail striping brush to clean nozzles. They’re very small but have 1.5 inch long hairs so it gets in there but is soft enough to not worry about causing damage.

I’m not so sure it’s dried paint in the tip. My guns are cleaned pretty meticulously after use and the 0.4 mm nozzle/needle set has done it since I got it. I will inspect the nozzle under a good magnifying glass for deformations that prevent a proper seating of the needle in it. If necessary I’ll buy a spare from Spraygunner.

Let us know how it turns out.

Hope you got this sorted, I would have guessed at flared nozzle too if you were sure it was all squeaky clean.

Pretty sure about the cleaning. I keep mine clean enough to eat a church dinner off of!

Just to eliminate from enquiries. If you can't see anything wrong, no flaring, scratches, cracks etc, and the needle doesn't look like it's sticking out too far, (or not far enough, that's more a sign of a blockage) then see if you can feel anything. Unscrew the needle chuck, and gently move the needle back and forth by hand. If it feels spongy, gritty, not smooth etc, then there is likely old paint hiding (and it does hide!!!!) in the nozzle, or it may be scored/scratched inside.

Well a new nozzle arrive via post office today. I fitted it and tested it. The brush performed flawlessly. Not sure what was wrong with the original nozzle, but I suspect some micro defect in the throat was preventing it from correctly seating the needle. This is kinda strange since the other nozzle was doing this brand new! H&S must have some quality control issues.

This is a puzzler, but at least you’ve got the brush back working good again. On with the painting!

You know, I've had similar complaints about H&S nozzles. The brass in them seems unusually soft and so thin near the opening that they are easy to damage just by using slightly too much pressure when reassembling them. One of the many reasons I don't disassemble a brush unless I am left with absolutely no other choice. So easy to damage nozzles in impossible to see ways while doing absolutely reasonable maintenance on them.

Good luck, and I hope it's a long time before you need another nozzle!

Thanks. I don’t think I will. I did not have any problems with the 0.15 mm nozzle/ needle which came with the airbrush as well. I’ve noticed is far more susceptible to these kinds of problems when using transparent paints than the Badger or Iwata airbrushes that I’ve used in the past. Maybe I got spoiled with the Custom Microns. Who knows. Other than that I have no complaints about Harder & Steenbeck products. I do strip mine down to the individual components and thoroughly clean them after every painting session, but I have so much time with airbrush maintenance that I know how to do it without causing any kind of damage to the instrument. I did have to replace the 0.15 mm needle, but that one was my fault as I kept dragging the tip against the work surface on accident. Tiny little burrs on the needle tip will start affecting your ability to do fine lines. But the airbrush otherwise is as durable as any other brand I’ve owned.
