Hi, my name is Laurence, I'm new to the forum and new to airbrushing. I've started to paint my own metal lures, or at least am in the process of kitting up for it, and so have bought an airbrush kit with this airbrush:

Welcome Lawrence, glad to have you aboard.
Have you bought any paint to use? The airbrush you e bought has a fairly small nozzle so be sure to mix your paint a little thin to get good flow using the recommended reducer.

Hi SiRoxx and thanks for the welcome. I haven't bought paint yet, just been practicing with drawing ink. I was looking at Com-Art but I think I'll follow the herd and get Createx, there's a wealth of experience online on how to use and any problems.
I believe that in any hobby that learning with good equipment is easier, because if it ain't going right then it must be you and not the gear!
hence the query as to a new airbrush, although tbh I would have to keep it south of £100 and have been looking at the Sparmax range.
I know everyone shouts Iwata but at this stage that may be an outlay too far.
Advice very welcome!

That’s a wise starting point for sure. Createx definitely has a good range for painting lures as the have pearls, metallics and Candies. Stick to the Wicked, Autoair ranges for this. Createx Colors range is more aimed at T Shirts. As far as brushes go, certainly Iwata are a world class brand for a reason. But Mr Hobby are a real up and coming brand with fantastic build quality. I can vouch for this particular brush as I won it as a prize and have enjoyed using it. I would say it is up there with my Iwata’s in performance and quality. If you can stretch another fiver, this brush will last as long as you want.

If you’re in the U.K. air-craft.net tend to have the best prices for brushes and spare parts. Their service is too notch as well.

Hi SiRoxx, well you've certainly given me something to be thinking about! That certainly looks a good airbrush, and I can afford it, but part of me is asking "are you going to get the use out of it?".
I'm going to be an occasional user, so I need something that will let me do what I need but perhaps only once a week or a fortnight, and so my gaze has dropped to the £60 to £80 pound range, assuming they would be worth buying compared to the one I already have?
The airbrush side of my little venture is intended to be secondary to leather crafts, so I'm having to keep a balanced view on expenditure from a common sense point of view.
The Sparmax looks suitable:

Hi Laurence, welcome from New Zealand.

In terms of brushes, if you can hold out and get an Iwata Elipse rather than the Neo or the Sparmax, you will find yourself well served.

Mark is right in what he says. If you’re at all concerned about budget. Then the Neo is probably the best of the budget end. There are videos of pros using Neo’s for some of their work. That’s good enough for me. Again, try air-craft.net for the Neo.

Welcome aboard Laurence,
You’ve had great advice so far,
The Createx Wicked Detail would be my suggestion for paint if you plan on going the Createx route. Make sure you also pick up some 4011 or 4013 reducer, some Transparent base and a small bottle of restorer and a small glass jar to put the restorer in (it’s reusable and the small jars are great for soaking nozzle that have got gunked up.
The airbrush with your kit will certainly give you a taste for airbrushing but the generic brushes can be hit & miss but they are useful in teaching you how to dismantle and reassemble without fear of damaging an expensive brush.
You’ll have speed humps, that’s to be expected but we are here when you start scratching your head :)

You might already know this but remember to drain the tank regularly- I do mine weekly and leave it open until I’m ready to paint again, ive occasionally forgotten to close the drain plug and wondered why it’s not shutting off when I start it up again - you’d think the noise would be a good reminder lol

thanks I'm on it. a bit like the other day wondering why my dust extraction wasn't sucking up dust even though it was switched on - but not connected to anything :D
