First experiment with acrylic gouache. I finally have a paint which allows me to wield a Custom Micron airbrush to its limits without clogging and tip buildup.

Black and white. Based on a photo of Sing Sing’s most notorious resident

Just about done with the first layer feathers. I don’t know if I’m very fond of my technique for painting feathers. I may have to find a different one for future projects. Initial detailing of the face and beak have been accomplished as well.

UPDATES: Completed work on the feathers on the wings using Prussian blue and black. Feather lines were penned using calligraphy pen. Additional black and orange work done on the yellow feathers for depth and shaping. Currently working on the green headdress feathers. A lot of details left. But it’s coming along!

I have parrots (but not a Macaw) and you'd be surprised how much the look in their eye can change.
As I recall I once attempted to pet the tail feathers of a macaw in a pet store. The bird let out an infuriated shriek and gave me one of the most intense looks of fury I’ve ever seen, man or otherwise. I believe they can convey emotions very well!

Background complete, Frisket masking removed and workable fixative applied to protect it. Ready to begin work on Mando’s armor and helmet.

Into everyone’s life a little rain must fall. Mine came in a torrent. This shows the hazards of using gouache mixed with 100% Windsor and Newton Acrylic Flow Improver. The pain and heavy areas lifted when a Frisket mask was applied. Unfortunately I do not believe the damage is recoverable. The good news is that I’ve come up with a new concept illustration for this as a replacement. In the beginning work on that again. I suppose I can redo this as a back up plan if it becomes necessary.

Initial concept sketch for new Mando painting using watercolor pencil on drafting vellum. I like the layout but there are some changes I want to make.
