I’ve been following this site with great interest for a while now and decided I’d better introduce myself.
I’m a long time modelmaker and airbrush owner and live in New Zealand. I bought my first AB, a badger 200 in the late 1970’s and ran this off a tire adapter until I could afford a real compressor. I later acquired a couple of Holbein brushes when the local distributer dropped the range and used these for many years until they died due to lack of knowledge and spares. I also started using one of the original AZTECK’s as a workhorse alongside the Holbeins.
After the demise of my Holbeins I came across one of the early Chinese brush sets via a local automotive chain and bought one just to see what they were like. I was surprised at the performance I was able to get from this and went on to get a few more. The originals were what I call model 130’s which are knock offs of the old Iwata HP. These got supplemented with some Type 180’s being the CMC style knock offs and all of these have served me well.
Along the way I have picked up tips on how to improve and tune the brushes and importantly, learnt to care for them properly. I wanted to up my game so started looking at better quality tools. I bought an Iwata HP-CH as a general-purpose brush. I was planning to get an HP-BH to go with it but then discovered the Creos Mr Hobby range. I now have 3 PS-270’s, a PS-289 and a PS-771. I’m now a big Creos fanboy and am now thinking about adding a PS-290 to the arsenal.
I like tinkering and this forum opened my eyes to the fact that the Chinese knockoffs can be fitted with Micron style heads and as a result I successfully upgraded my favorite Chinese brush, a Fengda BD-208 to mount a PS-771 head. I have some more PS-770 parts on the way and hope to try converting one of the PS-270’s as I love the feel and balance of those and want to see whether I prefer the feel of that over the 771
