Fimo to the rescue

Hi all I this is a Scalpel I got a while back which works great but the only down side is that after cutting and weeding out a ruddy great Skull I always ended up with a completely numb index finger for days thank's to the probs with my back,,,It's along story lol ;)

Well my better half Jeanette got some Fimo from ebay and I thought I could use in on my Scalpel for a custom made and fitting Scalpel so I spent a good hour or so slowly adding Fimo and getting it to fit my grip and index finger perfectly. I also made sure it fit my grip if I were to hold it a little further down the handle incase I needed to get a little more pressure through the blade for something a little thicker than normal and I ended up with my Black Mamba haha sorry I must of seen Mega Mind with the kids way too many times haha

It's not rocket science lol but it worked a hell of a lot better than I thought it would it fits perfectly around my finger and thumb and there;s absolutely no pressure issues with ones bell ringer ;) it's not like Simon Murray's gold Scalpel which I'd love to have by the way but it wouldn't be much good rally as I'd just cover it with Fimo haha

Oh and the blades are removed just as easily as on the normal bog standard ones ;) It's just an idea I had and thought I'd pass it on as it work amazingly well for me and also if after heat setting it in the oven and it's a little too smooth in the hand you can easily give it a light rub over with some 150 paper

Hope it helps ;)

ok i'm interested because I get same thing after a few hours of cutting stencils. My forefinger pad and 1st joint hurt like he** for a few days. My wife is a Paramedic so will see if she can snag me some, does it have another name by chance? I thought it might have different name here in the states.

It's called Fimo over your side of the pond as well shadow but you may of heard of the Sculpy brand rather than Fimo, also Jeanette get six blocks for about £9 .00 but you will get it cheaper your side of the pond I suspect ;) maybe in Hobby Lobby and it comes in a huge range of colours this is the link to ebay where my better half gets hers from as she uses it on her Crochet hooks ;) Leaving Facebook... | Facebook

Fimo is a brand of polymer clay. Micheals, AC Moore etc carry different clays. Sculpy is another. Fimo is a bit stiffer I believe. All need to be baked but don't use a food oven. You might not need to bake it. It may stay hard enough but they tend to soften as they warm up.

Oh good grief I must be losing my mind lol When I read it I thought it said your wife got it from ER geeshhhh thus the medic rant but thanks it is on my long list of items to get . ******** Ok great .. thanks guys!!

I believe that Sculpy makes one that is rubbery after baking. That might be better. You may need to glue it to the xacto handle. There is a glue they sell for that too:disillusionment:. As far as baking, if you seal it well in aluminum foil you might be able to use the oven.

Great idea Mat, though I don't have that problem myself, I bet it will help many others. Nice share!

Sorry Peeling Chrome I don't use exacto products, it's cheaper using a Scalpel handle and the blades are easier to get hold of over here and cheaper as well, as are the blades also they they will take going into the oven at any heat . I have only used the Fimo brand and I didn't need any glue, all I did was roll out several thin layers and moulded them tightly around the Scalpel to the shape that felt comfy for me and fitted in different positions as well, so I baked it as per the Fimo instructions said , so the Fimo would harden and dry solid onto the handle and the grip in the handle, and it's as though it was factory made lol. It went into the oven for about 30 to 40 mins on the lowest setting your oven has just on grease proof paper but I did make sure I placed it gently on to the greaseproof paper as to not leave a flat spot on one side and that was it ;) but remember to check it after about 20 mins to make sure that it's ok as all ovens a different from gas to electric just to be on the safe side. Oh It only used about half a block or maybe just under that if I remember lol ;)

I've been a happy camper ever since lol I only wish I'd of done it sooner as Jeanette has used it on her hooks for ages lol as she has Carpel Tunnel in her hands from having the minions lol and she kept saying to use it and I like the proverbial bloke kept saying "no no it's alright" not wanting to admit defeat haha I wish I'd of listened to her sooner haha ;)

How about using Sugru? I've not tried it yet but it looks ideal for this sort of mod and reasonably cheap too;around £7.50 for a pack..

Here in Oz I would use a Selley's product called "Knead-It" , it's an automotive product used in muffler / body repair and comes in a cylindrical pack.
It's a 2 part epoxy resin that you shape as required and adheres to most [if not all] materials.
You work the stuff together for a couple of minutes and form your shape.
Stuff smells like sardines for a minute or so but after that is good.
Sands, files machines real good, and sets like a rock.

I looked up Sugru online and was fascinated by it. Could be a great alternative to the hot glue method some use to raise the height of their AB triggers plus so many more mod applications. Thanks for the mention Mank!

Nice fix...hey whatever works for ya right , you got me thinking .
