They look fine to me it sounds like your putting the paint on to thick? Use light passes so it's dry about as fast as you spray it

Just loosen the bottom one on the tank then tighten the top fitting first then the bottom one as it looks like the top fitting is solid to the pipe...

The thing with wood is if you dont seal it with a sanding sealer first and let it dry then give that a light sanding to knock down the wood fibers...
