    Hey Guys and Girls.
Just finished my first project for 2020.
As some of you know. I got my self a Cameo 4 plotter a few months ago and after some practice, I thought it was time to try a more complicated cut.
The project I wanted to take on is a tutorial from Scott Mackay at Thin Air Grafx. He has 2 tutorial videos on YouTube and sells the Vector files on his site. I will link to the website and the Tutorial Videos at the end of these posts as I’m in no way taking credit for the design, and because his videos do a FAR better job of an SBS than I can do here LOL.
I made myself notes for reference while painting the project which I will also post. This is something I will definitely do again, after planning it out it was really helpful to have my notes available during the process.
I hope somebody gets something out of this thread as I really enjoyed this project and would recommend it!

The first stage was to paint a base. Unfortunately I got carried away and didn’t photo the early stage, but it’s pretty straight forward.
I scuffed the black Aluminium sign blank and used a Mini Gun to spray a Candy Base Coat made of 1 part Autoair Aluminium Base Medium and 2 parts Candy2o Blood Red.
I sprayed this heavier in the centre and kind of faded out to each edge.
I then used straight Candy2o Black to fade in from the edges. The Candies allow the metallic in the base to show through even though the outer edges are darker. I did add some Aluminium Fine to the mix to make the centre a little hotter.
Having cut the Web pattern on the plotter I put that over the base and weeded out the web itself.

I was amazed how well the plotter cut the pattern. After starting pretty carefully you can see in the video how well the pattern cut.
After it was ready to go I used the same Red Candy Base Coat to dust over the black parts and the Candy Black to lightly dust in over the Red base. This gives some really nice contrast and helps create a sense of depth.

Once this had all dried I clear coated it with Automotive 2k and left it to dry. A regular Intercoat would be fine, but I wanted the benefit of having a good amount of clear there so that I could sand it all back if I had any problems at the next stage.

Next step was to place the vinyl with the Spider cut out on the panel and begin painting. I won’t go into all of the stages of creating the image as honestly, the videos from Scott Mackay are fantastic and have a huge amount of information in them.
But here’s a photo around 70% of the way into painting the Spider.

When I thought I was done with the Spider I unmasked and almost immediately saw some areas that I needed to address.
For some reason the Illustration Opaque Red didn’t show up to well on the legs. I had added some to create a kind of underglow. So I used some hand held shields to add some more paint. This still didn’t quite get where I wanted it to, but it will the next time I try this project. I also added some more small highlights too.

With all of that complete all that was left was to Clear Coat it. I have learned that Createx benefits from a very light first coat of Clear and second slightly heavier coat. Then I hammered on another 2 coats to give me plenty to Cut and Buff.
I wet sanded with 1200 Grit and then used Sonax Cutmax and a wool pad on my 3” buffer.

I did a few rounds of this, then moved to a foam pad and the Sonax finishing polish for the final product.

Well here is the final piece. With a combination of the shine from the wet sand and polish as well as a metallic base, it is though to photograph so I apologies for appearing in the reflection.

This was a really fun project for me with some nice challenging elements. Also I got to play with lots of my toys Haha. As always there are elements that could have gone better, but on the whole I’m pretty pleased with the outcome.
    As always, thanks for looking.

    Well done, Simon!
It's just great to see when someone think well, does well, shares well!:)
This thread is one of those that are great contribution to the forum!

I like the way you do the things on your way (buying equipment, tools, etc).
Logical answer to myself here is you've got future in the field of custom painting, at least. Go to the top, man!

Plotter is great investment, isn't it!;)
