As promised I'm posting a SBS on the portrait I had the privilege to learn how paint during the Master Portrait Class at Foxy Studios in Katwijk, Netherlands on Oct 10-14 2014.

It will not be a detailed SBS as I don't want to hand over all the techniques I payed quite a lot of money to learn. I'm leaving the goodies out of the SBS and I hope this will trigger some of you to take the step and participate in a class, you will never regret if you do. I hope that's ok with all of you guys. :)

    Equipment:

    Airbrush: Iwata Custom Micron CM-C+ V2 - 0,23mm.
    Colors: E'TAC Marissa FX
    Board: Schoellershammer G4, 35 x 50 cm
    Watercolor pencils: Faber & Castell
Erasers: lots of various, electric, pencils, fiberglass et.c.
Textures: Marissa Texture Kit #1 + more
    Different shields and other stuff.
Shitloads of nice music from Carlo's playlist.

First the sketch was transferred to the board with carbon paper. Then the blue back drop back ground was painted with an opaque blue premixed color. Putting in as much details as possible helps a lot later in the process.

    portrait_sbs_1.JPG

Then the darkest parts of the painting where sprayed thru a cut out copy of the reference photo. Shapes started to put in place with a transparent grey carefully keeping track of the values and transitions. Skin and iris textures are also done in this first step with the help of various erasers, stencils and airbrush techniques.

    portrait_sbs_2.JPG

Shaping the face continues with various transparent colors carefully studying the color temperature of the face. Different techniques where used to spray the sharp edges, bouncing technique and direct spraying depending on the amount of color wanted. Mostly I used a Pharao Shield that contains most of the shapes in a face. More subtle skin textures added with every layer. Eye lashes started to form with pieces of wire used as stencil.

    portrait_sbs_3.JPG

The darkest parts of the blond hair sprayed thru a cut out paper stencil. And more shapes around the girls left eye, plus more textures.

    portrait_sbs_6.JPG

Close ups of the previous step.

    portrait_sbs_4.JPG

    portrait_sbs_5.jpg

Final step of the facial shapes made with transparent colors carefully and constantly monitoring the highlights, values and transitions.

    portrait_sbs_7.JPG

Next step is the lips. Changing to opaque premixed colors and torn bits of paper. I'm freehanding the dark textures with my airbrush. Erasers also used for creating the highlight textures.

    portrait_sbs_8.JPG

My lipgloss highlights were a bit off.. but it's easy corrected.

    portrait_sbs_9.JPG

Close up of the eyes with shapes and textures finished.

Next step is the blond hair. To be honest I got scared to death when Marissa showed us the reference picture with a girl with blond hair.. But when Marissa did her hair demo the whole class sat there with their jaws dropped to the chest. I took her no more than 10-15 minutes to complete the foundation of the hair with airbrush, erasers and wires as texture tools, total magic!! It took me about an hour to do it, but it was my first time with this technique.

    portrait_sbs_11.JPG

When the hair sketch was done it was time to move over to the underpainting, pulling the flesh over the bone structure. This is made with an opaque flesh color.

This is a s far as I got with my painting during the class. I will try to finish it this weekend.

    To be continued...

As i mentioned somewhere else before: Awesome work and a great sbs. Think you can't tell a lot of the way you did it in detail (Marissa would mind ;)) but this is giving a good impression.

Thanks for the insight sounds like you had a fantastic time and produced a brilliant painting, you must be itching to try the techniques you have learnt on a portrait of you own, so thanks foe taking the time to post this..

So I've finished the portrait this evening. Glazing the hair and around the eyes, the right cheek, forehead and chin. Colored the iris, blackening the pupils, eyelashes, completed the left eyebrow. Well that's about it I guess. :)

Photo in bad light, will replace it for one in daylight tomorrow.

    Hi Matwes,
I see that you seem to have a masking fluid for the lip highlights that is blueish. What brand is that?

The Schminke one is exactly the same except it does not come in a pen but a tube.
