It really bugged me I was not happy with the smoke which seemed to let the whole painting down, so thought I would try another approach. As I have never attempted smoke I can almost guarantee this is not the correct way :).

First I blacked out my existing effort of smoke and re-established the gun highlights, I also found out that with claybord you can simple wipe the paint off with a rag soaked in cleaner ..

Now I cut out several little shields and templates from a copy of the reference printed onto clear transparency
    templates.jpg

I used the templates to slowly build up the shapes and also used the 'split' frisket, (i.e cut a slot in the transparency film and spread it apart and spayed through the gap), method to get some of the very fine lines.

Looks a lot 'cleaner' than the original version I did freehand, but still room for improvement.

You do realise that this is a challenge and your giving away your secrets, lol

It looks great, not that the other was bad, but the practice is always handy.

Lol, the secret I am giving away id that I cant paint smoke :), another thing this challenge has taught me is that white is a right royal pain in the ar*e to use, avoid it like the plague

I used a little white three years ago for 2 minutes, the paint got lobbed, the brush got lobbed and the studio got trashed big time, two simple words I believe Dru Blair (good Scottish name by the way) invented "Subtraction method" subtraction of white from the equation method, subtraction of white from the shopping list method, subtraction of white from my current supplies method and subtraction of as much of any other colour as needed is to return to white method, lol

If this method is too complicated for the newbies they may try the simplified daft arse Scottish method "The take away method", meaning if there is any white within range of your work "TAKE IT AWAY!!!" ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

You'll have to try a lot harder than that mate if you want to catch me out, if we are doing these after paint pals all I have to is not empty the tank on my compressor in all that time and just spray some over reduced white at 200 PSI and I've got the dragonfly done, then I can draw two eyes and a nose onto some white paper with a felt tip pen and that's the lion taken care of, next challenge please,:confused::confused:
