Not quite as catchy as eye of the Tiger... but hey... So this is a 5x7 piece done on poster card. I like the shiny surface for scratching. Paint is Golden high flow and I'm using my 0.38mm eclipse along with a selection of erasers.

So the start is transferring the image to the card. I use carbon paper and a hard pencil drawing over the image I printed out. Part of the goal is to do this without cutting any stencils as I often do. I want to play a bit and see. I will be using some shields during the process.

I added the black background (it's out of focus so easy to do) using carbon black... easy coverage. Then go in and do the black of the eye. Then put some sepia in the brush and begin establishing the shadows around the scales.

Once they are in, take off the air cap and start speckling. The eclipse is excellent for that giving very accurate control.

Aircap back on, sepia to finish the colouration and some shading grey for the rest of the eye then colour onto the scales.

The remainder of the process is pretty much the same, just with different colours. The depth of field is very small so the trick is to make the focal bit really sharp and the rest not so.

So the majority of it is going from lighter to darker colours, lots of highlights till I get it close to the reference. I used shields around the in-focus scales to get the sharper edges.

I think it worked well enough for what is essentially a freehand piece. I think the use of stenciling would produce a better image. Must try it again with some stenciling through and see how it goes.
