I liked doing the sbs on the bonobo so why not do an other one but now from the start
this is how I make a trace of a animal portrait , I only do a basic trace with the important shapes but leave out the details in the fur and while I trace the ref photo I start looking the colors I see and what etac efx colors would come close to the original colors I am not looking for a exact color match as it is a painting and not a photocopy

here we go with paint , I like to start with the darkest shapes as I can repair those shapes easier than a light shape
I made a good study of the ref and noticed the dark shapes are 3 different colors the nose being near black the mouth more a dark sepia and the eye a dark burnt umber ( I use the Etac efx color names so translate those to other brands of paint)

the nose is a near black so I go for paynes grey and when I look real close there is a different color with in the near black so I only did a few light layers on the nose but did go to max saturation on 1 nostril

    thanks twood :)
the next step: I used burnt umber for the eye but I didnt put the surrounding dark shape in that has to wait till I have a base color and I used the sepia smoke for the mouth

I do need to think between every step and pick up the camera but that is no problem I like to make a good SBS and show every step I make up to now I made the easy steps but it wont be easy as I make more steps and you all will need some DIY tools and a eraser but I am getting ahead now and I will show you what you need tomorrow

today I started with the base color I need for this portrait , I looked at the ref and noticed that the lightest color is a yellow so I picked golden ocher to lay a base down some parts are lighter some darker and I know it doesnt look like much now but that doesnt really matter in this stage as most will be covered with a different color

My guess is Ron will spray over the wires so he can get hair texture. I wonder if I am close :)

the wires are indeed to create the fur/hair texture if you look at the ref you will see the bear has short and longer hairs and not all hairs are straight and that is where the frazzled wire comes in to play

how it works : you hold the wire down in the direction the hairs grow and spray trough the wire then move it to a other spot and repeat the step try to keep it random as this bear hasnt got a comb ;) I will show how it works in my next steps

I have been busy today and I have some trouble concentrating so I only did a small part this evening when I noticed I started to make mistakes
any way I worked on the darker shape around the bears eye
I covered the golden ocher with brown ocher but only a light layer and covered that brown ocher with burnt umber I used the short wires to create a short/fine hair texture
    DSCN1564.JPG
DSCN1565.JPG this bear ref in not completely in focus and I sprayed some brown ocher over the parts that are not in focus to remind me to keep it out off focus
