    Hey there,
I took after each session a few pictures of the progress I was making on a Harley primary cover. The plan was to create a effect of a machine behind a glass cover. Around I wanted to have a copper casing effect made with copper leaf.

On the first pictures you will see the black cover and my sketch/plan how to design it. It's created from a combination of different reference pictures.

The first step after scuffing it to a satin finish was the basecoat for which I used autoborne white. Afterwards I masked the outer ring ( where the copper is supposed to be) because I wanted to created the inside first the clearcoat and put the copper on. Why? Because I didn't know if the leafing glue will affect the autoborne.

Next I traced the picture with seral paper and blocked some ares in to see which gear is where etc.
To be faster with the really dark areas I masked everything and cut the areas I needed.

You can see now how the depth and the gears are already more visible.

I should have probably continued with the monochrome but didn't want to spend too much time on that project so I went on putting some light color on. Color wise I be used etac and schminke colors with a micron sb and two sotars (fine and medium setup). [I have easier control with the micron but somehow my shading etc I can do better with the sotars]
I used mostly ochre colors like brown ochre red and the monochrome was done... Forgot to mention earlier with burnt umber.

For the metal parts I used paynes Grey so the blueish tone is visible. When it is necessary I erased some areas, which is with the colors and on the base we'll doable. For masking I only used shields now anymore no tape or cutting anymore, since it's anyway a weak point of me. I added also a detail shot so you can see some areas in close up. From now on it was going darker, shading and tighten up shadows and edges in a rather slow process. Some areas like the gauge I didn't plan much so I just tried what I thought would be good. (tried some molotov markers for the lines there which worked quite good too).

Great start and an interesting project too. I’ll be following along to see how it turns out.

More colors more details more structures that I scratched and erased.

The third picture you see here is a Photoshop where I use my phone (note 8, for the pen :)) frequently to just take a picture and try out some colors effects etc to get an idea how stuff might look and if u like it that way.

I also created the fire effect behind the gears with some red and yellow. Then unasked the copper area to prepare for a clearcoat. I used already for the middle coat a 2k sparmax clearcoat since I wanted to be safe incase I mess up the copper work, otherwise just a mid coat would do too. Something that can work with the leafing glue though.

You can see now the first clearcoat which I let dry out completely for almost two weeks. The third picture is a close up.

After I masked the inner ring and used the leafing glue, let it sit for some time and applied carefully the copper leaves. The last picture shows a close up of the leaf and you can see the dull picture because before I masked and put the copper on everything was scuffed again.

To be continued one last time. ;) [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

In the last step I put on the Glas effect and created a little more depth in the background fire, where i went in with some dark red on the edges.

I sprayed some rivets on, where I didn't want to lose too much time and went over with a brush so things and the copper get a brushed faded look.

The last pictures show the end result with another clear coat on it..the best I can do without a spray booth.

I hope also if I didn't take too many pictures you could get an overview how I did this project and that I can and probably could be done better in an different approach too. The best ist to just start at some point bevor Overthinking everything. Took me 4 months before starting (probably avoided it) and only a few working days to get it done.

    Greetings, René m³[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

Incredible work, rediculous amount of detail in so small a piece, your steps are more than clear enough, hell even I could follow it:)

    Exceptionally well done:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

It's one of the coolest steampunk designs I've ever seen:thumbsup:
Watching your results is inspiring me to create something similar. I've got different references for years, but never started making even a concept in Photoshop:)
