Hello all, my name is Dean I'm from the West coast in the USA (northern California) and I've lived in Reno Nevada now for about 10 years. I recently caught the bug to learn to paint with an air brush and have been searching for resources, without aalot if luck... Until now it seems I am a construction manager and an amature photog. My main interest in airbrushing is to create artistic expressions in surreal photorealism and secondarily to learn to do custom graphics on unique and interesting substrates. (Think knot hole and mouse on the side of a toaster done in wood grain, or a 3d landscape on a shop door ) that's my ambition at least lol we shall see if I've any talent to speak of.

Welcome from the U.K. Nailbender. Sounds like you have some cool subjects to learn. Have you had a chance to try using the airbrush yet?

Welcome home Dean. I am glad you found us and joined in the fun that is airbrushing.
Going the route you talk about I would suggest looking for some classes from Dru Blair https://www.schoolofrealism.com/ he does also do short classes . Plus Vegas always offers a lot of work shops in the world of airbrushing.

    Welcome from Australia Dean,
I like the sound of the 'custom graphics on unique and interesting substrates' its nice to hear of a different application to art work. Not all art needs to be hung on a wall or driven around :)

as for the 'no talent' issue, well you'd be in good company, there are many of us that feel artistically challenged lol but with the help of the group I'm sure we'll get you headed in the right direction.

Airbrushing has a learning curve, its bigger if you have no 'arty' background but not impossible, I'm proof of that, I knew I was creative but never picked up so much as a colour pencil unless I was colouring in with the kids !
Nothing is impossible, just a little harder for some to acheive when they have to deal with life as well !

Come on in, the water is fine and we have floatation devices if you start to feel like you're drowning lol

Hi Dean, welcome from the UK. First piece of advice, if you haven't got any kit yet, ask here first, and we'll make sure you don't waste money on the wrong stuff.

Second piece of advice, anything you don't want painted - hide now. Once you get going everything looks like a canvas, and sounds like you have a head start on that idea lol.

I appreciate those word very much, I do have some degree of artistic background... just not in this arena. I have done some portraits in wood and am currently developing some things with concrete. My passion however has yet to fully manifest in other mediums. I have always admired the artist who expresses true emotion through their craft, be it music or paint or what have you... and also I'm one hard headed soft hearted s.o.b. so once I discovered the challenge of this medium as well as the potential... well "it was all over but the crying" as they say here in america ;) I'm just glad you all will have me! Lol
So thank you again, I am very much looking forward to learning and creating with you all.

Thank you, and yes I have. I bought a cheap iwata neo and a ton of other stuff like stencils and masks and acrylic paint ( wicked and created mostly) as well as some junk like cheap houses and such. I built a crafying/painting bench and a regulator panel. I bought some books and a cricut machine to cut vinyl and such... I've been practicing the basics on glass so i can just wash it and start over...lolI'd like to learn about the erasure technique I've heard about... but I'm not really clear on that part yet. I'm struggling to get the hang of the shields as of yet but I'll get it sooner or later I'm sure. I am thinking about buying a real airbrush though. I think either an iwata hp-c plus or h&s 2 in one ( I can't recall the model name) and I'd like some advice but I'm sure this is t the proper thread for that so I will refrain from elaborating here. I will find the correct one to ight

Iwata Eclipse HPC+ would be the general recommendation, great workhorse, but if you head over to the 'airbrush' section you'll find a heap of threads on choosing an airbrush
Erasing isnt as difficult as it may seem, just needs a gentle touch. again, search 'erasing' in the search field i'm sure you'll have enough reading for a few hours lol

Hello neighbor! I just returned from Utah about a week ago... took my third class with Ben ashby in Ogden. He is an incredibly talented artist in the concrete medium. And recently inducted into the concrete HOF if you can believe there is such a thing! Lol... (there is!) Hard guy to get along with but absolutely brilliant in his craft.
