I have Silhouette Cameo 2 and the Studio software is all I use...You can bring in JPEGs and use the trace feature. You can adjust and change to fit your needs

That’s good to know Twood thanks. I guessed the software that comes with it would probably be half decent as the Cameo’s have a god rep.

You can simply download the Cameo software and try it.
    It is free.

There are a lot of videos on YouTube. To learn how you can use it.

the cameo is a great little cutter

the silhouette studio design/cutting program is good especially for text,
not so great for straight-up drawing/designing
get the upgrade to designer edition so you can import svg's at will ($30 here)
if you find the newest (ver. 4+) a little daunting to start with, go back the last vers.3 release and try that, i still use ver.3 as ver.4 bothered me)

for that i would recommend downloading the starter edition of drawplus form serif
it is a legacy version, so no more updates
but for a free program to play with and learn on, it is very hard to beat
coupled with silhouette studio may be all you need, this is all i use (but i did upgrade to the full drawplus version for about $20)
plus if you ever want to upgrade serif's affinity designer will only set you back $50,
and you will be familiar with their terminology/basics because of the drawplus learning

inkscape is also free, more robust/feature-rich, harder to learn and more buggy, save your work every 5 minutes

My stencils sit in the corner of my warehouse in a pile, think a rat has moved in back there with them so I'm hoping it will chew me something unique:D

I learned originally off a dinosaur vector program called Anagraph back in the 90's, then went to Illustrator and FlexiSign, Flexi had a pretty user friendly platform once you got working with it, last I heard they went to a monthly subscription like Adobe, I still have an old cracked version on my old laptop on it's last dying breath, but the disk wont load up on the newer windows. It's a shame as it's way easier to use than Illustrator.

I downloaded the trail of Affinity as it looked a lot like flexi, it wasn't really, but I didn't get a lot of time to sit down with it either, for 50 bucks(and maybe a rabbit) it's worth a try. Funny though airbrushing I have more fun seeing whats lying around I can spray through, I may go the plotter/vector route down the line.
